I was talking to a ew drivers today, The company I am driving for has 2 trucks where the AC is not working, and one of the guys said there is a DOT regulation about this. Have any of you heard that there is? I am gonna research this , I dont think there is, but Sounds like there could be due to comfort for the drivers. If its 100 plus out and you get into a truck and drive 100 miles it can turn into 150 degrees or more.
AC not working, is there a DOT regulation about this?

They dont check your heating and a/c. They arent safety issues to the public. Although the may check your defroster. On a level 1

thanks, I didnt think there was anything about it in the regs, but the DOT website puts drivers comfort as an contributor to accidents, it says that it causes fatigue.

They know it can be a factor in accidents, but they have yet to pass a law that says it's required. I would venture there is large of amounts of $$$ being spent to keep it that way. (anything related to driver comfort is being fought tooth and nail. ) If there was law, it would mean more downtime for the larger companies and union fleets. As it stands now, they don't have to do anything until it's in the shop for something else, or they don't have to fix it at all. Pass a law that says it needs to work, and they will have no choice but to get it in the shop, before it can cause a failed inspection.
roadranger550 and ewill71 Thank this. -
My impression is that if it's on the truck, it has to work. No?
ewill71 Thanks this. -
Not true, only safety sensitive items need to work, like lights/brakes/wipers/ defrost. Not radios/a/c/sliders etc.

If the ac isn't working due to a faulty blower, that falls under the heater/defroster rule, so that does have to be fixed. If the AC doesnt work due to a refrigeration system issue, then no. Now if the AC refrigerant is leaking through the evaporator and entering the cabin, that might be considered a safety issue. Im sure breathing refrigerant gas isn't particularly a good thing.

There's no FMCSR that cover AC's. However, you might want to look at OSHA.
