I have a problem with my AC system on my 2008 KW with Cummins Isx.
It was working great a couple of weeks ago, but now only blows warm air. There seems to be a problem with the compressor clutch not engaging when you turn the system on or off. It just spins free with the belt and the front part never turns.
I heard you can change just the clutch on the compressor or do you have to replace the whole thing. If I could just change the clutch that would save me recharching the system which was done last year. Any info appreciated. Thanks

You can replace just the clutch but you will need to get it from an aftermarket AC parts supplier like four seasons through an auto parts store. Dealers will tell you that the clutch is not available separately. They don't want to sell clutches, just complete compressor units. Is the clutch coil getting current to it when you turn the AC on? Is the clutch facing burned up with a wide air gap? You may just need a clutch coil to repair it. It would be good to check the voltage to the clutch coil once the system is in operating condition to prevent another failure.

Thanks for help. It is getting voltage when I turn the system on/off. Just not engaging. I will try to pull it apart and go from there.

Check if the system charged with freon... If it worked and quit freon might leaked out.. To replace that clutch you most likely will need special tools to do it right...

Our 07 KW T800 with a Cat has gone through 2 AC hoses, they develop a pinhole up by the coolant resivor. Not sure if the Cummins motors route em differentley but just my .02

He wont have 12v to the clutch if the system has little/no pressure.
(its designed that way to prevent damage)

So if he does have 12v at the clutch, the system has at least enough charge for troubleshooting.

It might have enough freon in it to turn on the clutch, but just not enough to make it cool down. I've seen that, best thing to do is hook up to the high/low pressure hoses and see what's happening.....................maybe pull the systen down, evacuate see if it draws negative pressure on the manifold guages and holds it. Than refill with freon. I'm not sure how much the new KW's hold, my old ones usually take 4 pounds, and that'll get 40-45 degrees coming out the vent.

He verified current to the clutch coil and as long as it has ground it should engage unless an unusually wide air gap is on the clutch or the clutch coil is burned up or weak.

    Sheesh.
OP, You can buy clutches at Freightliner if needed, bought them there myself. I know my last truck went though them at the rate of every year or so. Just be sure to have an impact handy when you do it.
