Hubby had severe tooth pain while up in Canada on vacation. Found an emergency dentist and they took care of it temporarily at least. Sick is sick. Maybe he won't get the full dental service as back home but at least they'll take care of the emergency. Try ER at hospital if nothing else.

Get him to a dentist. Now. The dentist will only give him prescriptions to deal with the abcess and pain, but he needs to do it.
I had this happen to me on the road 20 years ago.
I could not sleep for days due to the pain, the company I worked for then was unsympathetic. Its a health and safety issue. He should not ne driving.
Within a day of getting the meds I was feeling better, and could sleep, but I got the tooth taken care of when I got home in a few days.

Yeah, I'm not feeling really good about him driving right now.

Definitely do not allow this driver to drive the truck. Under the medical circumstances you described, he would be in violation of §392.3 Ill or Fatigued Operator.

Just tell him to get it taken care of or you can get a new partner after he's dead.

Tom oftx , healthcare is a personal choice , I was simply said "IF HE " the the antiseptic action does infact remove some of the infection as is evident in the saliva that is "drooled" out, I fully agree that dentist intervention is the best course of action , I was simply offering remedy that would make this unpleasant circumstance more bearable for the both of them if HE decides not to seek treatment. Not trying to argue , and yes I realize the risks that infection presents ect ,I am sharing from first hand experience , as I used to be so poor that this was commonplace , this method works , in fact I keep a few vials of this product in my just in case bag , and was sharing for reference for all , we currently live where dental care is readily available but some times we find ourselves away from the comfortable life. No hard feelings.

DO NOT LET HIM DRIVE! He could be distracted from the pain and cause an accident! Get him to an ER at the very least! They can give him anti-biotics.

Not arguing with you at all. I have done what you have said once before when I had a periodontal abscess until I could get treatment, because after all, relieving some of the pain is necessary. :)

The OP mentioned the driver was also feeling ill in addition to his pain. This is why seeking immediate treatment for the infection is needed. The abscess may have partially ruptured and/or spread.

I personally invest money in my health care, because nothing worse than being away from home and an illness hits. This is why I have a private internal medicine doctor who I have access to 24/7. The money I spend to be a member of her practice has been priceless, especially on the road.

Wow... in no way let him drive... you know he has an abcessed tooth that is not being treated... if the infection can and does move towards the brain and causes swelling of the brain... which mean he can have a seizure. ..seriously you need to get him somewhere now... even if you pull into a rest area or truck stop and call an ambulance. ...it doesnt take weeks for the infection of an abcessed tooth to travel to the brain.. it takes only a few days...you must to the responsible thing because you are aware of the situation....

As many have advised; he needs antibiotics.

If he is concerned about having his dentist do the work, that won't be an issue, since again, as others have pointed out the infection needs to be knocked down before any definitive treatment is done.

Over the counter topical solutions might reduce the pain; they will do NOTHING for the infection.

I am a retired paramedic and have a Bachelor's degree in healthcare; the poster's who have indicated that this is serious are absolutely right - that infection isn't going to get better by itself - it will get worse by the hour.

While you cannot make him get treatment, please don't risk your safety by having someone unfit to drive do so.

Show him this thread if you need to - if he still needs convincing - PM me and I'll give you my mobile number.
