I have lived in Abilene the last 4.5 years and we really enjoy the community. With that being said I think the time for my military career to come to end is quickly approaching. I always hear people talk about Midland/Odessa oilfields. I also always here about Abilene getting ready for the oil boom because Sweetwater can't support everyone. So my question is what are the employment oppurinities like in this area for driving? I'd be willing to commute about 45 minutes to the office/truck yard. I already posted in the trucking school section, that I am considering attending the 6 week cdl class that TSTC offers, and with any luck start driving, and stay located in the Abilene area since I already own a house and my girls are in school. So is this a possible plan or just wishful thinking. Your input woudl be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Abilene is close to where a lot of action is supposed to be taking place pretty soon from what I read. I would think there would be opportunities based out of Abilene or at least in Sweetwater. If you haven't already, it would be worth a drive to Sweetwater and see what kind of activity is going on and start gathering information. This may be a good time to get work in the oilfields. Keeping in mind the cycle of oil booms.

Thanks for the info. Sad part is it will be May before I can do anything, then have to wait for class and 6 weeks after that I'll be done. Good thing is I'll be on terminal leave from the military for 3.5 months so I'll still be getting my full pay check while going to school and hopefully getting hired somewhere in Abilene area. But your right I should probably start looking now and talking, I guess it can't hurt to let people know my intentions. Especially since most some are on the military/ veterans most friendly employers list. Anyway thanks again for the info.

Plenty of work in Abilene area. Going to go up and down with oil patch. Lot of fuel hauling jobs were open out there last time I checked.

Good to know. From your expierence, are these jobs always availible? Basically the soonest I can do anything is start school in May/June time frame, then go from there. But if for some reason I stay int he militay couple more years, would jobs likey still be availible in a couple years. From what I hear they will be, maybe not as many jobs, but jobs in this line of work will always be availible. Any truth to that? I know we can't see the future but we can play the odds.

How about affordable apartments in and around the Abilene area. I would need to relocate and have no clue as to what places to look for.

I might be interested to work in this area. If this is near the Cline shale then things should really be looking up by now.

Check out JH Strain and Sons. They are a road construction company out of Tye, but have work all over the Big Country and Conch Valley. They are the ones working on the I20 service roads in town. I worked for them for 5 years. They don't pay a whole bunch, and their equipment is not the greatest, but they are a good company to cut your teeth with. It will also be good experience if and when you would want to transition to the oil field.

What kind of place is depends on what you want. Rv, apt, trailer or house. Weather you have a wife and kids that need certain things etc. Where may depend on the job you take. If the yard is on the north side, you might not want to live on the south side. Things like that make a difference.Rockdoctor and BigRigCT Thank this. -
Thanks for the info bro. Will be looking for an apartment for just myself.
