Still in research mode for making the career switch to trucking...

Does anyone have any input on AAA Trucking School in Philadelphia? I had spoken to a representative there the other week when I was investigating company paid CDL training via Prime. Now I'm investigating the school on its own with tuition covered by PA unemployment options. I'm thinking if tuition is covered then I'll have more employment options afterwards since I don't want to start in OTR.

    Thanks in advance!

    160 hr. course looks good.
I looked at the companies that hire from there and there's some good ones like you're looking for.
I'd put Old Dominion at the top of the list.
    New Penn
    Prime tankers

Many I'm not familiar with but some other drivers will probably help out on those.

I grew up in Philly, and you do not wanna be local with 0 experience. Philly is right in the middle of NYC and DC, and you will have to go to these places and the cities in between. It's a recepie for disaster. Your trucking career will be over befor it starts. Go the OTR routr. Put some years under the belt. Learn this industry, and then go local. If your not willing to do this, I would suggest a different career option.

I have to disagree with you. I know a few who were OTR less than 6 months and in one case never, that run local in that area, and toss Baltimore and DC in the mix too, and are doing just fine.

It's really a matter of what you want to do. I prefer long haul Coast to Coast OTR, but its not for everyone. Others don't mind the North East. A good driver will learn based on the environment he is driving in.

Absolutly agree with you KMac, some people pick it up real quick, while others don't. The point I was trying to make is that getting a local job with no experience is probally not gonna happen. It appears the OP does not want to go OTR, and want to start off local, which I think would be a bad idea. There's a step by step process of learning what trucking is all about. You can't just skip the whole learning how to drive first and jump right into going into NYC. That would be a disaster. I've been driving for decades and I still hate going to NYC. Can you imagine what would happen if somebody fresh out of school went into went to NYC, or even Philly for the matter. I'm not trying to beat up on the OP, just trying let him know that you have to put in your dues first, and then go local.

Local or regional would be ideal - but runs to smaller cities like Allentown, Scranton, Harrisburg, etc. I'm going to visit the school this week and see what they have to say regarding my options - I'll keep you all posted.

Philly will always be in my heart brother. If your not willing to go the OTR route, regional would probably be best. You have to start somewhere, so check out JB Hunt. They have regional, dedicated, and intermodal. Your not gonna make crazy money, but it's a start. Get that one year under the belt, and then start looking for some local jobs.
