Wishing everyone happy holidays, need some advice about a new frame style Mack Anthem 2019 with MP8 engine offered to me at a decent price. I never drove Mack trucks before and i was looking to buy a cascadia.
Is it a reliable truck? If you compare it to cascadia in performance what would you choose?
Note: to old style truckers, all due respect to you but I'm not looking for extended hood kenworth or peterbilt, this is an investment and all what i need is a decent truck that's not gonna sit in a shop somewhere every now and then.

I can't tell you much about the mack.

But I can tell you that you are a brilliant individual and you will do excellent in business because you have intelligence.

I can't tell you how many guys that had to be super truckers, they got the Big Pete with the belt buckle. Can't have anything but the big Pete with the belt buckle cuz I'm a super trucker!

What you said is exactly correct. You need a good truck. Everyone out here that's thinking of buying a truck should listen to this intelligent gentleman. Greatest thing I've ever heard on this site- run for your life from that junk Peterbilt.

I can tell you this. The Freightliner is the best that you're going to get because they have the greatest Parts Network so wherever you're traveling there's probably a Freightliner dealer. By the way the parts guys are great, and you can go on to dtna connect and you can get schematics for every single part of that truck with part numbers and everything else.

On the other hand, when you call the Peterbilt dealer for parts, they just sit there and laugh at you. Then they'll tell you they don't have to sell any parts because they just sell chicken lights and chrome and they have money overflowing out of their pockets.

More people that want to come into this business should think like you because you have great common sense and you see what is correct.

I can't commend you enough. You have great common sense and you see through the stupidity, the wasted expense, and the stupid hype... you can tell the difference between something good for your business that is a good investment, and an overpriced worthless piece of junk. That puts you so much further ahead of other people, you're going to do great!

They're pretty reliable. Engine and SCR wise they don't have many issues at all. However, they have other annoyances. The hood latches come out of adjustment pretty frequently and the hood will rattle, also the front end alignments don't last very long. Comfortable trucks with great visibility though

I have two, a '20 and a '22. My son drives the '20 and is at 200k, I drive the '22 and it will be at 100k in a couple weeks. Still fairly low mileage for any problems to develop that you might otherwise find on a '19 with more use/abuse. So not sure if that helps much.

Freightliner may be making an ok truck lately, but I had a negative experience some years ago with my local dealer in Atlanta, and wouldn't buy one if it was the best ever because the dealer sucks.

The hood latches can be problematic. The '20 got one adjustment then later another replaced under warranty, No such issues on the '22. What I've done differently on the '22 is start hitting the hood latches, side fairing latches, and door latches and hinges with spray white lube every time I grease the truck (15k interval). The maintenance schedule calls for once a year.

Frequent lube and working the side fairing latches now and then is critical. The '20 has one seized and eventually I'll have to get under it and change it out. The rest are not ideal, and will get replaced when I get the seized one sorted.

Otherwise, the fuel level sender went out on the '20 just out of warranty, and since been no issues. It's in the shop for a PM right now, but also getting a phantom check engine light diagnosed, and a possible egr exhaust leak (random whistle noise under load). The '22 also developed an egr leak that was fixed under warranty and hasn't recurred.

The '20 has been a bit hard on steer tires, I suspect the bearing preload is on the loose side. I have not addressed it yet, but have the Dr Preload tool and spindle nuts for it, as well as some new bearing sets and seals if needed when I get into it. Original steers went 135k, the ones on it now are wearing about the same. None of that on the '22. At 100k still knee deep in tread and wearing evenly.

The hood mirrors are junk. The ones on the '20 got the Mack fix which was to run a screw through the trim ring to stop the rattle. The ones on my '22 fall out of adjustment in under 1000 miles, gorilla tape extends that to a few months.

The forward camera in the windshield for the Bendix co-pilot system throws a fault now and then. Unplug it, blow out the connectors, then reconnect and will work fine for several months before it happens again. When it faults, lane tracking is disabled, and on the '22 it won't read speed limit signs which is kind of nice at times LOL.

So all of that is minor stuff that doesn't stop the truck from running and only comes up 2-3 times a year. Nothing all that extraordinary with running a semi truck IMO. They've been great trucks otherwise. Comfortable to drive and easy to live with.

Nextran is the local Mack dealer and has been awesome. Not saying there hasn't been a hiccup now and then, it happens. I've had Freightliners, KW, and Peterbilt, and none of those made me feel like a valued customer worthy of being listened to like Nextran has. The rest act like they're doing me a favor just letting me walk in and ask for service or parts. If I eventually buy another truck, it will be another Mack due half because the trucks have been good runners and mostly trouble free, and half because the dealer has been great.

Cant say I've owned one but 2 years ago i demoed a new Mack day cab with the mp8 and m drive transmission and was really impressed with the truck, both power wise and when and how smooth it shifted, far nicer than the ultrashifts. Only real gripe I had was the wind noise coming from the passenger door being a new truck. If I were to buy newer would seriously consider one.

    Volvo owns Mack. MP8=D13 mDrive=iShift
IShift/mDrive is the best auto out there. The Eaton is a dog and DT12 is good, but iShift is so much better. I’ve shifted more gears than most posters on TTR, but it’s nice to put it in D and go. I have a small fleet owner friend who has a mix of Mack’s (inc Anthem) and Volvos. All of his latest purchases have been Volvos.

Siinman, haycarter and ducnut Thank this.
