That's a good point. I will look up the actual wording of the regulation. What was said at that link was still a little vague, it did not say AND or OR and can be interpreted a couple ways

So consensus is legally requires CDL and Hazmat as it's effectively 990 Gallons in one tank.

Hazmat yes, you are talking about 7-8000 pounds of diesel, well in excess of the threshold for requiring placarding and falling under HM rules.

CDL yes because you are hauling HM requiring placarding.

Tank endorsement - not 100% sure but the easiest of all to get, a simple written test and you are covered either way.

The biggest issue is being classified as a hazardous materials carrier, all the rules and compliance issues that go along with that, and then the cost of insurance for hauling hazmat.

All of that said it only applies if you take that truck on a public road. If you get fuel delivered to the truck and drive 100% on private property then even a cdl isn't required.

    Good point.

There may still be local requirements for storage of hazardous materials, and local permits though. Cities like to do this kind of stuff, smaller towns not so much. So as long as this equipment is only at one location, permanently, there would be minimal requirements.

Thanks for all the information, way too much hassle and complication for the small benefit we would derive from it.

Do I need tanker endorsement to haul brand new empty plastic tanks? Pulled over on the side of I79 by Jane lew WV right now arguing about it.. 4 tanks, total maybe 3000 gallon capacity between the 4..

If you have time, check with your insurance carrier about hauling your own fuel. I know you said that for now the hassle isn't worth the benefit but in case you change your mind, more information wouldn't hurt.
We have some 10 thousand gallon portable fuel bladders and some old tank trailers that we use for on site or remote fueling when we're working off-road. Our present insurance covers moving them and hauling them with any vehicle we own provided the driver is properly licensed,
We could pay a lot less insurance if we had the fuel hauling done by another carrier but we like the convenience, control, and efficiency of doing it ourselves.

I thought I was good. 383.93 question 11 sorted it out. Trooper made me miss my delivery in Charlotte by wasting an hour of my day. Oh well...
