Good way to catch cracks or problematic corrosion before it becomes an ordeal...
I hear you can use a torch or heat gun to melt the old grease off if you don't have a heated pressure washer, this is something I'm trying this afternoon actually. -
86scotty, thekidsixer, AModelCat and 7 others Thank this.

New grease pushes the old through and out.
The jaws get too full, and that can cause problems, cleaning it out by almost any means makes a bad mess, be aware of it. -

Cleaning off the 5th wheel and inspecting for cracks is recommended to be done at 90 day intervals. Also adjust the slack.

I just pulled the pins and lifted mine off and turned it over, well actually left it hanging on a chain. Scraped all the gum that use to be grease out of it. greased all jaws, moving, pivot points.
I rarely drop my trailer, maybe 6-8 times a year and use a slip disk.. When I pulled the pin it wouldn't stay out without a bungee to the rub rail. Works good now but after looking it over the springs are really rusty and the jaw has some wear so I ordered a kit and going to put new parts in it. -
Read the Holland and Jost Service info online.
Pretty much scrape and steam clean per six weeks.
Much depends on conditions of the job (equipment & use), but 13-weeks is too long.
Been a very long time I’ve been at a company did the steam-clean.
But old grease and new grease won’t stay adhered.
Fifth wheel is a steering component. And in driver loss-of-control accidents improper fifth wheel lube is the SECONDARY cause every time.
Old layers there since Hussein was Prez IS improper. And it’s all you see, almost, with any bobtail.
Super-Trucker has dried #### for lube.
You wanna have fun with Grampa Trucker at Petro counter seating for drivers, wait for him to finish the one about his paratrooper drop into the Au Shau Valley, then tell him he ain’t got guts or common sense.
Show us the fifth wheel, hand: got the guts to show us the stupid?

shatteredsquare Thanks this. -
I bobtail back from prudhoe sometimes, it has to be done every trip, You get mud and gravel on it and it will just gouge it up otherwise.
