My 5th wheel release is bent inside and I am worried that it's beyond repair, even though it operates okay.
That said, I would like to know a rough estimate for replacement with one that can slide and doesn't have a special combination movement to release when needed, along with the right "slick plate".
Speaking of slick plates, what are the pros and cons?
5th wheel issue, release handle is bent.

Slick plates are cleaner. You can buy 5th wheels now that are made with replaceable plates. To have one installed, along with slider plate and rails, probably 4-5k if buying new parts and frame drilling is needed.
Rideandrepair and spsauerland Thank this. -
Depends. I got a rebuilt 5th wheel and it was $2900 installed about a year ago but it was the same model i had to begin with so no drilling needed. I know an upgraded 5th wheel was around $4700 on the quote i got.
As for slick plates they are great for general useage but if you do stuff with a lot of dirt and dust i.e end dump they get chewed up pretty fast.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Okay, I'll bite, how in the world did a 5th wheel release get bent? I don't think I've ever seen one, I mean, you'd have to "miss" the slot by 3 feet. 5th wheels aren't Space Program material, get another handle, no?

Ok... I admit I$##:"d up, and would be LMBO if it weren't me....
I was at our yard a few weeks ago (we lease space at a yard that dozens of area companies share), and had to do a double drop in the process of dropping my trailer and swapping it with another...
But, there were other trailers dropped creatively and clearly blocking a safe turnaround, so I had to drop the trailer I had to move one of our other trailers so I could turnaround and properly park it without managing to hit another truck, trailer, or parked car. Problem was when I had to get back under the trailer I brought in with me to finish the job, it was at such a bad angle, I slid my 5th wheel about 6" to the left of the kingpin and bent the release, it appears to have been bent on the inside and I am just preparing myself mentally for the likelihood that it's beyond easy repair.
It engages and disengages OK, but the release needs to be pulled forward to about a 45 degree angle and it's annoying.201 and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
You talking about the release pull handle? Just bend it back into shape with a pipe wrench or something. They get pretzeled all the time. Drive tire blowouts under them is the number one culprit.

The heat should allow you to straighten the release handle without weakening it.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Just fix it like others suggested it’s not anything special.

You can get a rebuild kit significantly cheaper than an entire 5th wheel. They are pretty simple, just take a picture before things come apart so you remember how it goes back together.
