I have a 97 379 and have the antenna mounted on the drivers mirror. After reading some tech articles on antenna mounting it seems that mirror mount is possibly the worst place to mount an antenna regarding ground losses.

My question is, would mounting a 4' wilson silver load on a Breedlove puck mount in the center of the cab roof (aluminum with 4 horns) afford me a more efficient system than the MM9 that is on the mirror currently?

The 4' wilson on the cab will stand at around 12'10" to 13'.

There is a 3/4" hole already in the center of the cab roof from the previous owner which is plugged so I'm halfway there. Am I correct in thinking that the antenna will be happier with metal directly under it on the roof as opposed to mirror mount with zero ground plane.

The closer to the center of the vehicle is good and it is up higher too.
Only concern would be smacking it on trees or a low bridge.

You could always run a ground braid from the mirror bracket bolt to the antenna mount and one from the door to the body.
It is just a question of drilling another hole or using a hinge bolt from the door hinge.

I ran mine for 2 years and then grounded everything....huge improvement!

If you already have a 3/4" hole there, I'd drop in a Larsen NMO-K mount, and put a Larsen NMO-27 antenna on it. Simple base loaded antenna, works well, and is nearly indestructible. In case you do manage to mangle a whip, it's a standard 49" whip.

    Luwi67 Thanks this.

    Thanks for the replies.

The antenna will only be 6-8" higher than where it is now and, I think it actually takes more abuse where it is currently out there on the mirror.

The antenna bracket is grounded well and the door itself is strapped to the door jamb and, the cab is strapped to the frame.

My plan is to go with the Breedlove heavy duty puck with the so-239 connector then use a right angle so-239/pl-259 connector to 3 feet of coax to the radio. I am going to cut a 4" hole in the headliner for access to the bottom of the mount for swr checks and conceal the hole with a 4" speaker cover (bezel and grill).

Anyone see anything I might be over looking?

The hole might be 1" I have to get up there to get an exact measurement. I looked at the NMO mount and it seems it comes with 17' of coax attached to it. I was hoping to use just 3' from the mount to the cb.

Would a base loaded antenna radiate more signal than a wilson silver load stick?

Anyone have an opinion on a 108" whip tethered back to sleeper sort of like this:
