Its -5ish, checked truck, front freeze plug on oil filter base is weeping coolant.
P/n : Caterpillar Plug, 9L7657
Any fancy tricks to remove that plug without pulling the whole filter base (and therefore having to clean and regasket 4 other holes as well)
It seems if i do that, i may as well pull oil cooler and regasket those as well as the filter base (and clean and paint)

Cold water leaks. It probably seals right up once warmed up. I wonder if plugging in the block heater would provide enough heat to stop the leaking? I got nothing except drill that one, pull it, and replace with new.
I will be interested to hear solutions. Working on them outside at -5 isn't much fun though.Siinman, Rideandrepair, OLDSKOOLERnWV and 3 others Thank this. -
wind is currently near 20 or 30 mph, so im staying behind walls for a whileSiinman, Rideandrepair, OLDSKOOLERnWV and 2 others Thank this. -
This weather is retarded cold right now. I replaced a valve on top of my coolant filter housing, only to find a cup or so of coolant a few days later.
It’s very minor weeping out of manifold junction hoses that have been replaced before. Seems to happen every time it gets stupid cold.Siinman, Rideandrepair, OLDSKOOLERnWV and 2 others Thank this. -
Never did exactly that but if I did I would go at it like this. Use a hammer and punch and drive the bottom in rotating the plug. That will expose the lip on top of the plug. Grab that with a channel locks and pull it out.
If that does not work or it is a flat plug drill a hole in it. Pull it with a slid hammer and screw attachment.Rideandrepair, Diesel Dave, cke and 2 others Thank this. -
You sure it isnt coming from the large oring on the front of the oil cooler? It is right above the frost plug and might give the appearance the frost plug is leaking when it drips down onto it. That oring is famous for leaking when cold but not when running.
I think that plug is on the oil side alsoLast edited: Dec 23, 2022
IH9300SBA, Rideandrepair, bjytech and 5 others Thank this. -
If im lucky, itll be warmer in a day or two, ill top off coolant and start it up with no leak, if i can get to spring before messing with it, thatd be niceSiinman, Rideandrepair, OLDSKOOLERnWV and 2 others Thank this. -
Antifreeze will seep thru, where water can’t. The colder antifreeze gets, the smaller the molecules become, thus can seep thru an otherwise sealed connection.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
By location of the puddle I would thing the leak would likely be from one of the lower radiator hoses, common for the clamped connections to loosen up and leak when its that cold out.BoxCarKidd and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
Winner winner, front oil cooler oring leak, trying to get her started now (she sat for more or less 1.5 weeks) im probably due new batteries and ive had slow air ingress into fuel .... somewhere ive been sporadically chasing for a while, and a bad batch of fuel a week before thanksgiving, so shes quite grumpy about the whole processIH9300SBA, Oxbow, Siinman and 1 other person Thank this.
