I have a 3406E that I cant keep prime in the fuel system. Heres everything I did.
    • Replaced Head because it was cracked
    • Replaced all injector o-rings
    • replaced fuel filter base
    • tried multiple new primer pumps
    • new cat fuel filters
    • new fuel lines from tank to engine
    • replaced the fuel check valve
    • as a last ditch effort we put a check valve in at the top of the suction tube on the fuel tank to prevent any fuel from running back into the tank. Nothing has remedied the issue
The truck will fire up no problem. Then after 30 sec to a minuet of running it will start cutting out and running out of fuel. Pumping the primer clears it up right away, but wont run on its own until the primer is hard. The fuel water separator ends up not being full if you shut the truck off when its running out of fuel and pull the filters off. The only thing I haven't done is check fuel pressure. I am in the process of gathering fittings to check.
Any help would be appreciated thanks!

Do you have a manual fuel restriction gauge in dash? I have seen them go bad or hose go bad and pull in air on fuel suction side. Usually only causes problems when you do a filter change.

    Oxbow and SAR Thank this.

Didn't see anything about the transfer pump being replaced. Check fuel pressure first. If low below 75 at idle then it could be transfer pump or sucking air some where. Some one mentioned checking the tank breathers to see if they are plugged causing a vacum.

Check your secondary filter housing on frame also.. could be cracked or bad fitting or O ring. Letting it drain back over night

Givin the fact it starts fine and runs for 30 seconds to a min leads me to believe for certain the problem is on the suction side of the fuel system.

Transfer pump or secondary filter housing

Screw on an empty secondary and that's exaclly what will happen.
Check the O ring boss fittings on housing.

    Oxbow Thanks this.

Does the fuel run through the ECM
Best way to check the tank breathers is to leave a fuel cap off.

But I agree, it sounds like there's air entering the system on the suction side.

    Oxbow Thanks this.
