3406e fan clutch

    Howdy there

    96 379 with 5ek.
    Have been on some trips getting kinks out - was an auction truck.
    Seems that the fan clutch is sliding down after adjustment. Have put 2 sets of main drive belts on because they keep getting ate up.i cannot get them any tighter.. already afraid of breakfast by off the studs and bolts. I can’t see any play in clutch or harmonic balancer buT I’ve been wrong before..

    alll pulleys have been cleaned with screw driver and wire brush.
    Ac / alt look to be in line to me and have been adjusted properly (a ton) because every time I check oil I have to hav to pull up fan clutch and adjust..

    You probably need to replace your harmonic balancer , STOP over tightening your belts or you will wind up with a broken crankshaft. 5EK was famous for this!
    With it being a 96 replacing the balancer should be at the top of your to do list even if it doesn't solve your belt issue , but I am betting it does. Just google 5EK Cat broken crankshaft , and you will see what I mean

    What Star Rider said. I had one break, about an 1/8” in from the face of the main cap. Throw a balancer at it. Balancer is $500, crank is $3000 and a bunch of work. Ive got 2 5EK’s, been changing both of them every 18 months or so since the one crank broke. Even after a year and a half you can feel the difference in the engines with new balancers on them. The drivers were shocked because they never noticed the deterioration driving them but they sure noticed the change in them with a fresh balancer.
