look at buying 02 FLD with a 475HP 3406E cat mated with a 10 speed . the overhaul was done by CAT at a Cat dealer. 196k miles on rebuild. How reliable is this engine as far as power and durability? has anyone had any severe problems with this engine? I had a 350 Cummins and it didn't have the power i wanted and always got hot so im looking for a stronger engine with less problems. ALSO if you have a 3406E what kind of fuel mileage are you getting without mods?

The 3406e will be a good motor. My dad had a 1999 3406 475 hp and 1850 torque. The motor was rock solid and pulled. he also ran heavy and had no problems, but that was with a speed and 3.65's. It pulled so well that whenever he ran with friends he was always told to go last and they would have a head start because it was fast. he would go by them in the hills. The good thing is, it accomplishes the same thing that motors motors with 500+ horsepower do using less power. He got around 6.5-7. However that was local/regional and pulling heavy (steel, liquid asphalt, diesel) and in 1999 Kenworth T2000. In the fld, i would say about 6ish. And the motor was without mods. hope this helps.

On an 02 unless the motor has been replace it won't be an E model it'll be a C15 prefix of 6NZ is what it should be. They quit producing the 2WS cat back in 99, (00 year model truck) 01-03 is a 6NZ prefix for truck years with the C15.

The motor is out of a 99, it was rebuilt before it was put in the truck. the previous engine blew up in MO on a hill. head came off i guess that explains the aftermarket hood thou.

10-4 I'll get ridiculed for saying this but you're probably getting a better deal with the 2WS as opposed to the 6NZ. I wasn't a huge fan of the 6NZ couldn't keep a head gasket on them for more than about 400-500k if you were lucky. Seems like a lot of guys with that 6NZ think they have the biggest baddest motor on the face of the earth too. I've walked away from a few of them on hills. Guess they found out they weren't the baddest CAT on that highway:yes2557:

I have one in my 99 I.h. 9400 with about 750,000 miles on it and the motor has never been touched. I pull commodities hopper bottom all day most of the time loaded on returns trips. Summer ave 6.5 to 6.7 colder weather 6 sometimes more sometimes less. Mfg ratting of 370 on the block when I bought it 1.5 years ago dealer dynoed it at 450. Wish the rest of the truck was as realiable as the motor.......
