When I add ten gallons of engine oil to my 3406c, it ends up showing about two gallons overfull on the dipstick. I've been running ten gallons of oil in the motor, I should just reference where my actual "full" mark is when I have ten gallons of fresh oil in right? I just replaced the oil pump and added ten gallons of oil to the dry engine and it's still at the same overfull mark, is my dipstick just incorrect?

I remember having the same problem with a cummins/komatsu engine, drain oil, change filters, put in required amount of oil, start shut off and check and it would show about two gal over, drained two gals and ran it the next day and had to add two gals. On the next oil change I just ignored the over fill, ran it and it was fine, just one of those things you cant explain!
Gambino1994 Thanks this. -
Put the amount of oil cat recommends run it a bit and mark that as full on the dipstick.. most likely someone bought or was given wrong dipstick for your engine.. call cat with your serial number and they will know the correct amount I'd be hesitant to run it 2 gallons low thinking it's correct

Where are you getting 10 gallons from? Oil capacity can vary even between 2 engines of the same model. Different oil pan configurations, oil pan sizes, etc. 2 gallons overfull can be just as bad as 2 gallons low.

In my cat manual, 3406 no brake saver takes ten gallons of oil and everyone on the web says ten gallons. My previous truck a 1994 3406E took ten gallons, this truck is a 1995 3zj C model but to me it looks like the same exact oil pan. I did notice that the dipstick sheath and the dipstick sit below the level of the pan rail by a few inches. I forgot to measure it tho

How much are you draining out? Are you draining the front plug on pan (most older CATS have one up front) and also the lowest plug on rear of pan? Next time you change it pour it into 5 gallon pails and see if you are taking out what you are putting in. I know on some Cummins ISX engines you can drain the pan at the lowest spot and then drop the pan and there will be almost 2 gals still in the pan.

Is this after being ran?
Filter installed full or dry?Oxbow and Gambino1994 Thank this. -
I've had the truck for only about 30,000 miles so far. But yea I've drained both drain plugs each oilchange and I fill the new oil filter about half way up with new oil when I change the oil. I just got done replacing the oil pump and rebuilding the jake brakes so this time the engine and oil pan were bone dry when I added new oil. Now that I think of it maybe this pan is slightly smaller than the E model I had. They both have or had rear sump oil pans

Here is some info you might find useful. It's dated back to year 94 and I know there is different pan configurations so be cautious.
Gambino1994 and Oxbow Thank this.
