Is there a timeline from when the B was introduced, according to prefixes such as 7FB, 2EK, 3ZJ, 4MG.........? I know some where water to air and some were air to air but what were other differences? Which were the best and worst?

Let's get this thread rolling. In all reality, I am 39 years old so the "B" is before my time but I am lucky enough to own one. My 82 A model glider was repowered at one time from a 92U "A" 3406 to a very early production 7FB. I am lucky enough is was a factory 400HP/1375 ft/lb JWAC engine. From my Cat diggings, the first 7FB's for production were built on January 3, 1984 in Mossville, Illinois. The production run went til approximately September of 1987 and had a 425 HP ATAAC version with 1450 ft/lb torque. Now I could dig more into this if folks are interested, but I don't have much free time with job, family, side repairs, and garage projects. Current project is wife's Ford. I am bad about going down rabbit holes. I am putting MSD atomic EFI on her toy, but needed to replace ring gear on flywheel. Turned into rebuilding transfer case, rebuilding transmission (case was cracked and "repaired" once). Some pics KIMG0234.JPG KIMG0265.JPG KIMG0245.JPG
Wrapping up exhaust, then start in tank fuel pump hopefully this weekend. Then some Paccar MX work for another guy then this fall the KW gets pulled in and losses the AG100 and SQHD's.

So, most of the “B” model prefixes were built in overlapping time frames?

    Oxbow Thanks this.

Yes, seems that way. Arrangement # play big into mechanical engines. Not all manufacturers had ATAAC at same time and requires engineering work to put it on. While ATAAC is thought only as a efficiency or performance device, it is also considered an emissions device. Federal Emissions standards on HD truck actually started in 1974. 1987 saw a Nox reduction in California, so the CAC helped with air density and lower peak cylinder temperatures to meet standards. You will also notice timing was taken out and compression ratios changed during this period.

A little information on a Cat product serial number. First three are letters and is the prefix. This lets you know if it's a truck engine, loader, paver, generator, etc. Next five are numbers and go in sequence of build date. So each prefix only goes for 100,000 said units.

    Just a quick list here,
    7FB 84-87
    4MG 87-90
    5KJ 90 can also be 3406C
    3ZJ 91 can also be a 3406C
    3ZJ16182 up is C

    8PN 95 3406C mechanical

    PEEC 3406B
    8TC 86-90
    5YG 89-90 Really a 3406C/crank
    2EK 91
    4CK can be 3406B or 3406C 91-93 is PEEC.

    7XC is reman 3406B

This is a quick list and I will update and verify as time allows. I added the 3406C as that gets #### confusing!

Some 7FB’s are ATA and some are WTA, right?
    Are all 4MG’s ATA?

    wore out Thanks this.
