Hello; looking for some help with this old cat of mine 89’ 4MG. New aftermarket turbo 1000kms ago, new housing, diaphragm /piston seal/.. orings on AFRC(as i discovered diaphragm was leaking and cover full of oil) just in the last few days. Fuel toque screws were completely stock as cover still had wiring attached. turned both screws one turn out, also screwed in AFRC screw all the way, also just put new fuel transfer pump today. Fuel pressure at idle from fuel filter housing is between 40-43psi. Now between working on the AFRC i was driving the other day and lost power when i shifted into higher gears. Now when I shut the truck down for a bit and go to drive again I feel the power is back, and as soon as i get into the higher gears the power cuts off, what could be the issue? I pulled the AFRC cover and didnt see any oil in there( i dont think i tore the diaphragm while installing ) could it be the new piston seal? It was really hard to get into the housing? Or could the turbo be going? I pulled the intake and exhaust, the exhaust side is full of soot just like my old turbo, the intake side is clean no play at all, truck smokes on cold start white/bluish till it warms up. Other than that im stumped as to whats causing this issue.
3406b low power in higher gears

Are you making around 25psi of boost or manifold pressure? How much boost while it makes normal power vs. when power is reduced?
Fuel pressure at idle vs. at wide open throttle?
Condition and age of your fuel lines, filter and lift pump?
Just a few things to consider and help narrow down your issue.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
My boost gauge isn't working unfortunately. Ill check fuel psi at full throttle tomorrow. Some of the fuel lines are newer, some older. Lift pump is brand new installed today. all filters are brand new (1000kms) The truck ran fine i drove it without any of those things i did to it for at least 2000km or so. This issue arose after i changed the diaphragm and seal around the piston in the afrc housing. Not saying its connected but just seems super odd to me that it didnt have this problem until i changed those things.
LameMule Thanks this. -
Did you "hook" the fork when you reinstalled the AFRC ? or just push it in ? The knob on the AFRC pulls that fork.

Your boost gauge would be really helpful.
You'll want to check fuel pressure with a load against the engine not revving the engine.
If the problem didn't occur until you did work on it then that's pretty straightforward to go through and double check your work.
Some of the guys on here are brilliant with the b model pumps. If you can't find a diagram on the pump then take some pictures and ask a few questions on properly re-installing the diaphragm and plunger. -
AFRC is not assembled right.

See photo- This is how it’s assembled, i hooked it from the top and pulled on it and it was hooked up inside the governor. What am i missing here?

Here is another photo of how it is currently setup, all the pieces are out but shown in order on photo, other then the piston which just goes in the housing one way…

On the pump side there is a throttle screen on the block side make sure it’s in there
