I bought a 3406A engine that was overhauled for $$$CHEAP$$$. 425HP. I have no air compressor for it. Will my B model air compressor fit it? What will have to be changed if I put the older A model in a newer B model truck? I am thinking the biggest thing will be the gauges?

The gauges are the same, the wiring on the rest of the engine is pretty well the same what little of it there is. The fuel pum linkage will have to be modified as the A pump set closer to the rear of the engine and was driveshaft driven. The B pump mounts directly to cover has a better timing system etc. The A is a stout dependable engine but really likes fuel a lot. The B is a smoother better engine. I'm sure there will be several little things I have forgot or that you miss in the swap that will be a pain. Changing to a different model engine is never as simple as it seems.

So if they are the same block and head can I mount the pump from the B to the A? How about the air compressor? Does it bolt in? I couldn't pass up a 3406A completely overhauled for $1,000.

There are also oil openings that are not the same on the pump side of the block. The highest rating for the A model was only 400, there were no 425s in the 3406 series until the first air to air B model.

If your going from B to A , there's no reason not to switch the air to air over onto the A. Put a good turbo like a 177148 on the A and crank up the pump. Should do reasonably well. Still no B thou.
The timing advance is just not as refined as your B. And yes it's not going to win you any fuel mileage rewards but should still be a good dependable engine if built right.

It has a 177148 turbo on it. I dont know if the pump was turned up, but the guy said he will try to find the dyno report on the engine. He had it overhauled as a spare and got out of the business. It has been sitting in a crate for 5 years in his shop. He claims it is 425hp + so whoever built it must have turned the pump up. The fuel mileage doesn't so much bother me. I bought a truck for the engine that had a wasted front diff. for $1100. Way less than I could have scrapped it for or bought a running replacement B for. I pulled that B engine and put it into a nicer truck with a 13 speed that needed an engine. Much to my liking, the engine isn't missing a beat. I'm having that engine out of that truck rebuilt for a spare. I have no need for the flat-lander 9 speed in the donor truck. Now I have plans of removing the blown diff in the donor and rolling the rear axle to the front and turning it into a single screw due to finding a sizeable crack in the aluminum frame in back of the front airbag on the rear axle. Chopping the rear of the frame off, welding up a "cowboy" flatbed and turning the truck for a $20k profit after some paint and putting the A model in the donor truck. Crossing fingers it all works out.
