I would like to know what is the max reliable hp I can get from a 3406A CAT. I got my old CAT back a 290hp with a 350 turbo and 350 pump. I ran it trough CAC with max fuel and air on the rack. By the seat of the pants I think I got atleast 440 Hp. I'm looking at atleast 500Hp. Got a few new Detroit's noses I would like to rub in the dust. Any input highly appreciated.
3406A Hp.

what truck do you have the old cat in?
-
It's in a 362 Peterbilt. I owned the truck 10 years ago. A friend bought it and ran it for 3 years. He sold it it was involved in a rollover and the cab got scrapped. He repo'd it due to some money issues. He gave it to me for free on condition that I rebuild it. I got a complete 352 cab with it.

I was looking into this. I am looking for max efficiency. It seems The Performance diesel companies may be able to make custom turbo's and exhaust manifolds. Not sure about injectors and what not. Also, I think there are certain parts like the oil pump that will not bolt from a 3406A to B depending on the serial number. I think the heads are interchangable, but again I am not sure, as I am just looking into this myself.
Mr. Haney is most knowledgeable about diesels. Maybe we can ask him about the 3406A, as I'm interested in what upgrades the 3406A is capable of undergoing. -
Why not upgrade to a C15 and have a really cool old truck that you could afford to run?The best fuel mileage I got with a 3406A in a 362 wasn`t much over 4 mpg.

Worthken Thanks this.

You took the words out of my mouth Vampire. Excactly the same story with my old CAT, I also think there is alot left in the old motor. Eventually a C15 or even a Series 60 could be fitted. I still like my old CAT, and cant wait to get it started again.

I have been accused of taking blood out of someones veins, and leaving people speechless... but never the words out of their mouth. Just kidding, hahaha
. Don't rule out the N14 Cummins either. My truck originally had the Cummins in it, but as of now, I'm not sure which one I would put in there. The reliability and efficiency of a Detroit is attractive, yet so is the 6NZ Cat. I'm not looking to go beyond 475 HP, as that is all I would need for this KW. Then comes the issue of it bolting up to the 15 speed. Speaking of the 15 speed, it's weird having the high low range on the dash. Maybe one day I'll move it to the stick.

not much you can do with an A-model cat different fuel system than a b-model 4mph is about as good as it gets with the a-model but it will last a long time if you can afford the fuel cost!
Vampire Thanks this. -
Took the "A" out of mine, put in a Big Cam 3 and gained almost 2mpg.Not a CAT fan but the 6NZ is badazz !!
