I was just wondering if there's any particular switch needed for 3-stage Jake brake.
I figured that a regular toggle switch would work, but I wanted to ask just to make sure. I'm getting rid of the truck that the engine came with and if I need to take the switches I will. It's for a big cam Cummins by the way.
Also, is the only difference between a one-stage and a 3-stage the switches? In other words a one stage does all three heads but the 3-stage does the center then the outer and then all three. Is that correct and it's just a matter of the switches for 3-stage?

The Jakes are independent/ head on your big cam ( and most others). Most of the wiring I’ve seen activates 12V to the 1 head, 2/3 together and then all three. I don’t think it matters what type of switch as long as it can handle the voltage of the solenoids (I’d be guessing if I tried to tell the amp load). The problem is finding a 3 position on/on/on switch. Jacobs wire diagrams are easy to find with google search. But I can’t thing good a way to make a standard on/off/on found at any hardware store) operate the Jakes in 3 positions.
BoxCarKidd and Dino soar Thank this. -
Hey that's great. If I have to I can run two switches that's okay.
I like to have them mounted on my shifter instead of the dash anyway. -
Used an on off switch, throttle switch and a clutch switch. Power went through all three of them and then to the three stage switch. Stage one powers the center. Stage two powers the front and rear. Stage three is all three. So yes get the old switches.
Have to remember to turn it off as there is no computer to prevent stalling the engine.Nothereoften and Dino soar Thank this. -
I could be wrong but I thought some mechanical trucks had something on there that when it comes down to idle that the jake brake stops working. I could be wrong though it's been awhile since I've ran one like that.
Maybe I'm thinking of pushing the clutch pedal in.BoxCarKidd Thanks this. -

I think I was just having a brain fart. I think I was thinking about pushing the clutch in.
@BoxCarKidd that's a crazy thing you showed us there! Can you send me a link to that or get me a little clearer picture so I can read it?
That looks like some kind of old old remote control to shift the old Fuller Transmissions. Wow that is crazy cool! -
The problem there was from the owners manual to my phone. It probably does not get much better for me.
Using the controls on the newer shifter is a neat idea. I am not sure if you can get three positions on those or if they will carry the load. May have to run it through some 5 terminal Bosch relays. -
I'm going to take the original switches out and I'll figure something to mount them on to my shifter.
I always hated having to reach up to the dash. My last truck was wired as a one position Jake brake and I put a toggle switch on my shifter and that was great. It made it a lot more fun to drive and a lot more practical.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
There was a thread couple mos ago on very subject. Regarding wiring of switches. And differences etc. It had good info on Cummins 3 stage wiring and operation
Dino soar Thanks this.
