I was curious what the advantages or disadvantages are of having 24:5 Tires.
I think if you have low profile 24.5 tires, that's the same height as a regular 22.5 Tire?
Are there any trailers that run 24.5 tires? It always seemed logical when you buy new Steer tires that you can put the Steer tires on your trailer. Can you mix a low-profile 24.5 Tire with a 22.5 Tire?
I like the idea of having a full size 24.5 Tire because the truck sits a little bit higher and it gears you a little bit higher and I think that it gives you a higher rated weight capacity (the tire itself)?
But it kind of stinks if you can't recycle it back to the trailer. If you cannot recycle it back to the trailer then when you buy steers you just get rid of them? Or they give you a credit for the casing I suppose?
Does it change your speedometer if you go from low profile to tall tires, or from 24.5 to 22.5 or vice versa?
24.5 tires, advantages vs disadvatages?

I run 24.5 on the trailer because I need the height while loading. Just run the steers until they need to come off, collect the casing credit and put new ones on.
Hard to get casing credit on lo-pro 24.5's lately.exhausted379 and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
24 and 22 point 5 require different wheels

It does change your speedo. You’ll need to get an ECM update.
22.5 standups are same circumference as 24.5 low pro.
I like the 24.5 low pro from a visual perspective but anymore everything is 22.5 low pro because that’s what all the fleets run so all the road service and shops are stocked for it.
I know my Dad only runs/ran 24.5 truck and trailer but I think it’s because old habits die hard. I think maybe they run a little cooler in the desert and also the brakes get more air on long steep downgrades.Rideandrepair and Dino soar Thank this. -
We need to run 24.5 H rated tires (16 ply) for our overweight permit in NY on our tractor and trailer. It's a requirement ,and DOT will check that we have them. They
Definitely handle the weight better , the H rated tires don't squat as much as the lower ply tires and the little bit of height difference helps when off-road . We'll always rotate our steers to the trailer . We also never run retreads ,too much damage when they come apart ,and running 107,000 lbs everyday ,if you pick up a nail and the tire goes low a retread will come apart, versus a virgin tire just going flat.Voorhees84, Rideandrepair, Midwest Trucker and 4 others Thank this. -
We run 11R24.5 on the 99 CH mack that I drive. Its got the 16 ply Heavy rated 14.4k or 14.6k on the steer axle. 18 speed mack trans and 4.42 mack rears. Still @1600 @65 and 1700 @70. 44k mack top load rears.
My dad has a 93 ch midroof with 22.5 lo-pro and 3.91s with .62 double over 13 he's at 1400 @65-67.
In the 99 i was 13'8 - 13'9 with 11r.24.5Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I have pulled a friends 2017 MAC 48x102 flatbed a few times, it came with 24.5 tall from the factory, so yes you can get them with that size tires. As mentioned earlier the Mega fleets run the 22.5 so much they are easier to find on the road. My wife and I made a run to NY and of all things to pick up in a tire, I found a 10mm combination wrench in a trailer tire. Made 3 stops before I found a truckstop with a 24.5 tall trailer tire in stock. The TA at Harborcreek, PA didn't have a trailer tire, but said they could get me one..... for like $618

24.5 will hold up to more weight. But both will handle 80k
Yes you will have to recalibrate for speed if you change drive tire size.
I wouldn't run a 22.5 beside a 24.5 low pro and it is vital to me for trailer to same size as truck because I run both steers and drives out on trailer. I have blew a drive and I have picked up a bolt in a drive and I buy drives 4 at a time at a minimum preferably 8.
They say low pro's are better for fuel mileage but I found out the hard way like accidental trucker that you can't give a 24.5 low pro casing away.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Always had 24.5 LP on Truck. Last trailer had 22.5 LP Current Trailer has 11R 22.5. Tempted to put aluminum wheels from old trailer w/ new 11R 22.5 On drives and buy 2 new for steers. I think Tall tires would ride better. Also currently have directional rims on Truck. Limits rotation to same side without breaking them down and remounting. Almost all Fleets went to 22.5 LP when oil prices drove tire prices up. Only advantage for me I see would be the effective final drive ratio. I don’t know exactly but I’m thinking the effect would be equal to changing current 355 for 370. Rears Might help my little Detroit get up the hills easier. Otherwise I have 2 tire racks and always looking for and planning tire purchases/ Drives 4 at time Trailer 2 at a time
