I just bought a truck in cash January 2014. The total weight showing in the sticker my truck is 52000 total (12000 front and 40000 rear).

However, in the title and registration it shows: empty weight: 16100, carrying capacity: 63900, and Gross WT: 80000. So will I need to change so that the weight reflects the sticker attached to the truck? The carrying capacity, and gross weight, how is that calculated?
Also, would I require to file the 2290 form if I only own the bobtail BUT the trailer is owned by someone else? The weight 52000 is below the 2290 form requirements.

2290 is truck and trailer permit for 80k lbs you pay $550 a year for said permit. You need to show 2290 at the dmv to even get plates/tabs.
you NEED heavy highway vehicle use tax aka 2290 for any semi truck/trailer combo that meets the requirements. -
GVWR ..means "gross vehicle weight rating". Not your empty weight. 2290 is for power unit, trailer has nothing to do with it.
-
So the Power Unit I need to input on form 2290 is 80000 LBS aka Gross Weight on the registration. I don't understand where the carrying capacity is at 63900. Shouldn't the carrying capacity should be the GVWR which is 52000 LBS? I'm not sure where you get the Empty weight of the truck. The registration says 16100. I'm not sure if that is accurate.

That. 16,100 is if you have no fuel, or fluids, and you have no personal belongs in it and no apu.
realistically my truck regs. Says its 16,100 but with full tanks, apu, and my stuff in it I weigh out about 19,500 -
in case you haven't figured it out yet, 16,100 +63,900 = 80,000 which is normal limits of a fully loaded truck for the most part, this includes the truck trailer and load.
plain and simple and no bones about it, do the 2290 for 80,000 and be done with it.wis bang Thanks this. -
I bought a Freightliner Cascadia sleeper almost two months ago. I havent started driving it yet because I am currently taking my CDL. From what I can understand, the taxable gross vehicle weight of that semi tractor is 52,000 pounds, but for some reason I am supposed to include the weight for a trailer that I might one day buy, which makes it over 72,000. The vehicle is currently with the seller in another state, so I will need temporary plates to drive it home.
I read in some DMV papers (introduction to new authority) that I need to file for Form 2290 within 60 days of buying the truck.
However, the MC department of DMV here in Nevada responds to my email that I do not have to pay fuel tax even when I begin driving it, I will only need to do that once I begin hauling for money.
Just to make sure, I went to the IRS webpage and their "Interactive Tax Assistant" and they have a wizard that responds that if start driving the vehicle in November (even if not for money) then I should file my first Form 2290 at the end of December.
So both DMV and IRS says I dont have to pay Form 2290 yet (although for different reasons). But when I asked my contact at TruckersBookkeepingService, she says (although she is not very clear) I need to file it NOW. QUESTIONS: Who is correct? Some here say I cant get my apportioned license plates unless I have filed a 2290, who is correct? Could I even do it, I havent gotten the DOT number, vehicle license plate or CDL yet. I understand 2290 is something you file every 3 months - do I need to register somehow before I can file the first 2290?Last edited: Oct 12, 2021

You pay the HHUT in July for the prior fiscal year. The present owner should send that 2290 with the rest of the papers to 'allow' you to re-register and then file next year.
New Jersey has a twist, you can register for your initial year without the 2290 [you don't always get it] but the first 'year' is only 11 months. Come back with your 2290 next year and it then runs for 12 months.
Going back to OP, this is a tax for wearing the highway; more of a surcharge as trucks grosing over 50,000# and up pay it. New trucks come with a MSO [manufacturers statement of orgin] which the states use to make the original title and the MGWR is usually around 50,000#.
New Jersey charges extra to title it at 80,000#...and that's before they cheat you out of a month's registration...Oh Yeah, they also place a lock on the title once IRP plates are issued. When you go to sell you need to first delete it from your IRP account to unlock the title. -
2290 charges by the maximum load you are going to tag your truck to haul. Usually 80k. I tagged mine at 85500. Had nothing to do with weight of your tractor or a trailer you might buy. It is heavy highway use tax. Tax for the full amount of weight you will haul down the road .
You file a 2290 once a year. It starts in July or August ,ni forget. You do not pay any huv taxes before that. So if you start operating in April and 2290 starts in July you get 3 months free.
Always buy a bit of guel in every state you roll in to. That way you minimize your chance of owing that state under ifta.
