Hey guys so after sitting with the KW rep and configuring a W900L, I'm at a cross roads with the tractor weight and having to spec it differently to be able to haul reefer with it. Long story short the spec is 285 WB, 86 inch sleeper, APU, 565 Cummins, 18 speed, 3.36 rears, 260 gallons total on fuel with 30 gallon def... spec sheet is showing 18,914 pounds soaking wet. Now we haul reefer from the PNW, and I will be hauling a 53 footer with it. I spoke to someone who spec'd the same with 300 WB but he pulls a show set up with a 48 spread reefer trailer from Cali, he says he is pretty heavy himself. It was likely to happen but I wanted to spec a dream truck before the 900L series died off, but this has also got to be a work truck and not cause TOO many issues with not having the ability to haul most reefer loads. I figured the APU giving me a 500 pound write off, and running 130 gallons of fuel vs 260 knocks off roughly ~1450 pounds off the tractor weight. So, ~17,500 pounds if I decided to run half the fuel, am I still too heavy you think or do you think I won't be causing myself too much trouble and there will still be enough loads to pull out there? We primarily run PNW down to TX and surrounding states and back. I also wanted to spec a truck that could help me buy myself out of trouble if I needed to jump ship with its resale value. What do you guys think? Bite the bullet and spec it down? Or I should be able to manage with its current spec? I'm getting various numbers on KW T680 and Cascadia weights online so I'm at a bit of a loss.

Do they require a thicker frame or 1/2 liner at 285? That might be adding some weight? Is the 18 heavier than the 13 speed? 3 batteries instead of 4? Aluminum fixed fifth wheel save anything over steel with a slider? Flattop instead of stand up bunk? 22.5 wheels n tires instead of 24.5?

Any reason not to go with a 13 speed over the 18?

The stamped weight isn’t “soaking wet”, you’ll be over 20k with fuel and all your personal belongings in it. Ways to cut weight would be smaller bunk, shorter WB so that you eliminate a cross member and possibly a carrier bearing, aluminum stationary 5th wheel instead of a steel one with a long slide, low 22.5’s if those aren’t speced currently.

For reference, my current 579 has a stamped weight around 18700, but it came from the factory with a steerable lift axle. The one I have coming has a stamped weight around 17600. Not having a lift axle is the main difference, but it’s coming with 15” less wheelbase but also has the 80” UltraLoft bunk versus my current 63” raised roof.

Another option is just get what you want because its what you want and deal with it. There’s a way around every scale.

Edit: just read that @Tug Toy said a lot of what I just said. Lol

Pretty sure over 282” wheel base requires an extra crossmember and carrier bearing. My door tag is 18020 but I am 20480 with 240 gallons of fuel (120 gallon tanks that are 22x72”) 60 hydro, and all my #### wedged in my 60” bunk, 11r22.5 and dsp40s.

You could make sure it has shut off valves on the tanks and just run the 120gal tank on the driver side too. You’d be stopping once or twice a day for fuel but not running around with 150gal in the passenger side would cut 1000 pounds or so. And if you do that from the start your passenger tank will be dang near dry anyway.

As I commented on your other thread, mine is 19,000 wet. I really can not see anything you could do that would get your wet weight down to mine. 242" wheelbase, Series 60 and flat top modular sleeper. Perhaps going with smaller tanks, or like you said, running half full, but 20,000 wet should be expected.

Ooo, that is a good question about the frame at 285. I’ll have to check in with my rep with that, that completely went over my head. I just went through my spec sheet. I can lose 500 pounds stepping down to a 72 inch sleeper.

It was primarily resale value, but I just combed over the spec sheet and will contact my rep with other configurations to see where I’m at with weight.

Ooo, okay. It does have 22.5’s on the spec sheet right now. I can possible lose 500 pounds by going down to a 72 inch sleeper, not sure on my weight loss if I drop down to a 280 WB. Someone I know with a 2021 W900L 300 WB is sitting at 11580 steers, and 16300 on his drives on a cat scale with a 48 reefer spread on the back.

How often will weight be an issue? I’m assuming now a lot just due to 90% of the trucks running reefer from PNW are short aero trucks.

I’ll check back in with my rep and see the weight loss if I go down to 280 WB, maybe drop down to 72 inch sleeper or take off the sleeper extenders on the 86 inch sleeper to help with clearance if I gotta make a tight U.
