Been tinkering with the idea of going owner operator and found an ideal truck within my budget.
    2017 Volvo VNL74 T630 midroof
    Volvo D13 engine rated @ 435 HP
10 speed Eaton Fuller manual transmission
    553,000 miles
The good thing about this truck is that it has an APU (Thermo King) so the engine won’t have that many hours idling on it.
I aware the miles are up there(they’re actually low considering the year of the truck). Are there any major issues I should be concerned with?
    Here’s the truck in question.

What are you planning to run with this truck? Make sure to check everything out on that APU. How many hours on it and how many hours on truck? Get a ECM dump on it as well. Bring it to or take a good mechanic with you to check it out. At 553,000 miles it is gonna be needing a few things. If geared wrong it will most have bad emissions. Good luck!

Make sure the DPF has recently been serviced. Pull the EGR cooler inspection plate and make sure it’s not leaking. The aftercooler needs to be capped and pressurized for leaks, as road vibration cracks them along the end tanks, usually toward the bottom. Check for history of clutch actuator replacement, as it’ll be about time. It’ll be needing a full set of injectors, if they haven’t already been done. Ensure the turbo actuator properly works. Check history for AHI replacement. Check history for DPF sensor replacement (there are 2). Check history of overhead being done, as that should have been recently done. Check history of transmission being serviced, as that should have been recently done. Shine a flashlight at the underbunk heater box area, as the heater core has a tendency to crack. I’d plan for a complete set of shocks, if they haven’t recently been replaced. The cab shocks are a PITA and IIRC the drive tires have to be removed to change the rear shocks. If the truck has the Z-leaf/air bag front suspension, closely check the leaf spring bushings, as that suspension doesn’t have shackles and eats bushings. Check the engine and cabin filters. Ideally, you’ll want to pull samples of everything.

There are several things a Volvo will need or should have had done, around this mileage (500K-600K). It’s about the time most fleets start trading them, as their maintenance costs start to escalate. You need to be careful.

Yes, what and where will you be running. I run a 670 with a 10 speed and spend much of my time in the mountains where I wish I had a 13 speed or the 12 speed I-shift. What is the rear gear drive ratio? That's important to know with a 10 speed. Also, if you are going to run OTR I would suggest considering a double bunk. It allows a lot of storage space, which is something I can always use more of.

At that mileage, unless the truck was excellently maintained, Volvos usually turn into "shop queens"!
My experience at the company I work at...........YMMV!

I looked at double bunks but the prices are still relatively high on the market (around $110K to $125K) and most of those have a lot of miles on them considering their age(500K on 2019 to 2021 models is a lot in a short time). Plus, most of them don’t have an APU,which suggests that they’ve been racking up hours idling(everyone knows idling emissions trucks tends to wear them down prematurely).
I plan on running nationwide, perhaps even signing on with my employer (we have quite a few owner operators, with some of them doing Walmart dedicated runs).

If it has high miles in a short time, that’d indicate it hasn’t been sitting around much, so minimal idling.

Possibly, but at the same length with the prices the way they are it’s right up there with paying $200,000 for a Freightliner with 500,000 miles on it. At which point it may be due for an overhaul anyway.

I wish CIT’s website didn’t suck so hard. They get all of Dot’s trades and those trucks are full-history and full-sampled. That dealership chain is lacking in so many ways. They definitely need new leadership, to get the basics straightened out.
