I am about to order a truck for my new hotshot/ shipping business. I just submitted my loan app and business plan and I am looking at trucks. I have always loved fords and currently own two. Unfortunately the 2016 F-550 is not rated as high as the 2016 5500 is for towing so I am in a moral crisis here.
1. Should I stick with Ford and and sacrifice 2k of load capacity or make the switch to Ram?
2. I'm also concerned about the 4.88 gears on the Ram vs. the 4.30 gears on the Ford, how well do those trucks do on the interstate in terms of speed and fuel mileage?
Ram ratings are: GCWR: 37,500, Base Weight: 8,330, Tow Capacity: 28,870, Which leaves me with about 19,000 for cargo after the trailer weight.
Ford ratings are: GCWR:35,000, Base Weight: 7,986, Tow Capacity: 26,714, so 16,900 for cargo after trailer weight.
or...
F-450 SuperDuty: GCWR:40400, Base Weight: 8611, Tow Capacity: 31,489, 21,689 Cargo after trailer weight, I'm worried about longevity with his setup since it is not a commercial grade truck.

I meant to put 2016 not 2015 in the title. I will be ordering a new truck.

the F450/550 are both class 6 trucks. but far as the rest of the options you have listed, i would go with the f450 same axles as the 550 just a bit lighter. im assuming these are all 2wd trucks.
the f450 would be my choiceFoxcover, Mudguppy and PaulatFrontPorch Thank this. -
I have a friend that went from a 2005 4 door business class (C7 Allison) to a F450 4WD auto. He is in love, says the ride and power are unbelievable. He runs at the top of its weight rating. Told me the rear end is the same as a 550. His is a Western Hauler and said it was only available in 4WD.

The equipment rental company I currently work at has an F-450 (2015) that we use for our "smaller" deliveries (as opposed to the rollback or semis), and especially NOT being a big Ford fan, I will tell you this....That truck has some MAJOR balls! More than enough pulling power, even has some gumption when needing to pull out into traffic while under a load....Only complaint I have had so far after 4-5 months is that the owner only bought them in 2WD. We end up at a lot of muddy/sandy construction sites, and it being a flatbed dually, it will sometimes want to get stuck once the load is offloaded, due to not enough traction. Which reminds me- with a dual axle gooseneck trailer, and an 8,000lb-ish lift loaded, you don't even notice how little the suspension lowers! Dang thing is a beast......
All the aforementioned coming from a Bowtie man too.....I feel so dirty now!bigred81 and PaulatFrontPorch Thank this. -
I thank it is a Super Duty but I will not see him for a week or so. Is the SD only available in 4WD? I do not remember his weights except I argued his 11 something K truck weight was gross in the door jam. He said no! Cat Scale. His trailer is a triaxle with 17.5's because he could not find any 16's that really held up if that tells you anything. For the little bit I have been around it I am impressed. I am really a Dodge Cummings guy that also owns a Larado Kodiac and needs to take a second shower.

Only my opinion, yours may differ. Ford....best truck for towing and hauling, worst engines.
Ram...good engine, not so good truck.
Ford will get better fuel mileage though. I ran both.
I wanted to try a new GM/Chev Duramax but have two friends that bought brand new 3500 Denali duallies.
One is a horse farmer that previously had an F-450. He said the GMC is a city cruiser. Great ride but doesn't feels as stable as the Ford towing.
Other tows his excavators and backhoe. Said it has all kinds of power, but not the truck his Ram 3500 was. -
Well this might just be kind of bias, but I'd go with Ford sense I hate Dodge with a passion
