Hello everyone, this is my first time wanting to change my oil on my dd15. I like to do everything on my truck because I always have a hard time of trusting anyone to do it for me. Plus is nothing wrong getting dirty lol. My questions are where should I buy everything I need to do a oil change and should I buy aftermarket or original? I know original is always better lol. And I don't have a water separator, don't understand why. Like should I buy it from Walmart? If I'm going with original is freightliner the only dealership I can get it from? Thanks

Get your filters from Freightliner, Western Star or Detroit. I would only use OEM there. Your engine takes 10w30 oil. Use whatever brand you like as long as it’s for Diesel engines.

Also you’ll need to buy or make a fuel system primer for changing the fuel filters.

What do you mean? Also I seen a video where the guy says freightliner recommends to change the fuel filter a later time but not the same time when charging the oil. Does that make any sense?

You’re supposed to change the oil and oil filter first. Start the engine and then verify the oil is full. Then change the fuel filters. Get yourself a compu-check fitting and a pump bug sprayer. Install the fitting on the sprayer and hook it to the port on the filter housing and prime the system. Works great and a lot less money than buying the whole thing. You can get the compu-check fitting from Freightliner. Here’s a link to give you an idea.

Is it necessary, or will the small primer pump on the fuel pump do?

The built in one works fine for me. It’s just really awkward and you have to pump it a Long time.
I pump the heck out of it until it I feel it getting more resistance.
Then I crank the engine no more than three seconds. Then pump it up again. Usually fires up on the second time, occasionally I have to go a third round.
Never crank the starter too long or you risk taking out the high pressure fuel pump. Big bucks.

Do you know what this is? It looks like some gauge inside the engine oil.

That’s a bulk oil meter. Shops like Speedco have those meters mounted on a hose that pumps new oil into your engine from a large bulk tank, instead of using jugs or pails. They can just set how much oil to pump in.
