I have a 2011 KW T800 Cummins ISX motor and have a starting issue that nobody seems to be able to correctly diagnose. It intermittently starts, sometimes drags, sometimes fires right up.

New batteries (gel), 2nd new starter in a week, new battery shutoff switch and cables, cables all look good with no corrosion, alternator testing good.

Anyone have any suggestions of where to start? I was told since it came from Ohio, check the de-population plug where the wires go through the floor under the cab?

Are you talking about the engine not starting even though the starter is running?

If its just the starter not running try unbolting and cleaning all ur grounds to the frame. Check all grounds to battery terminals, remove and clean.

Check little wire from the key switch is in good condition, clean and tight

The engine will sometimes start right up, sometimes drag the starter a few turns then just stop, and sometimes just click 1 time.

Could a bad ignition switch cause this?

You know how to check that....

Go under with a test light and put it on the little wire from the key switch, get someone to try it a bunch of times and see if the thing lights up everytime.

You could disconnect the main power to the starter if you dont want it to start.

You could also try jumping it with a screwdriver when it isn't starting, that will bypass the key switch

I'll check all of those. Thank you. Feel like I'm beating my head on a brick wall right now. At least this gives me somewhere to turn to.

I crawled under a brand new pete that wouldn't start and discovered the factory had bent the key switch terminal over so it contacted a bolt and grounded out. Moved it a quarter inch and wraped some tape around it and problem solved

    missy1st Thanks this.

I mean where the little key switch wire connects to the starter, make sure it isnt bent over and grounding out against something. Easy to do when ur working in a tight space in the dark

Someone told me that the depopulation plug could be corroded, yet I can't find any information about that at all.

You can disconnect that little wire altogether and get a jumper wire, hook it up to the starter and touch it to a battery positive and see if it starts. Thats another way to troubleshoot key switch

    missy1st Thanks this.
