Hey guys, I need a bit of your help! I got a friend of mine who got stranded in Texas again. She has a 2009 Peterbilt model 386. She recently started draining out her Air tanks after she gets done driving but now when she does that her truck is having problem Regening. She is not sure if she has 2 or 3 air tanks on her tractor. She knows where the two air tanks are but she's not really sure about the third tank which is located under the tractor next to the fuel tank. When she drains that tank she ended up draining about 2 gallons of thick black oil. So my question is what is that third tank that she is draining? I believe that tank is not an air tank that she's draining, I think it's some sort of compressor.

She never had this regen problem when she wasn't draining the air tank.

I also believe what ever she's emptying out in that tank is what is causing her Regen problem.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Regen is exhaust side. What in the world?

If you are draining a dry tank and or a wet tank (Especially) and get oil sludge then your air cleaner is not working and your entire braking system is at risk once that #### gets to eating away the diagphram that gets between your brake chamber and your brake emergency spring side. You will discover your primary air supply draining away as Moses parted the sea faster than you can finish the slow down for a highway ramp. It happened to me long ago.

I don't know enough without looking at your truck in specific to offer any other opinion.

Something is going on There is only one big tank in much older trucks or two tanks in a air brake system, again a wet tank and a dry tank beyond the air cleaner which sits under your cat walk usually left side on your tractor. OR most any.

Thanks for your quick response. She took it to the dealer ship and they change a few filters for the Regen and the same problem return 4 days later.

She's not sure if she has 2 or 3 air tanks on her tractor. The first two air tanks drain out perfectly but the third tank is where the oil is coming from, she's not sure if that tank is even an air tank to begin with.

It blows my mind how someone can own a truck and no so little about it. Dealerships must absolutely love people like that. The money thrown out her window is insane I'm certain.

But on a helpful note, this third air tank that your not sure is an air tank. Does air come out of it when draining? That would be a sure sign.

And if it is a air tank that would have nothing to do with a regeneration.

My guess would be if its that much oil then the compressor is letting oil into the air system. I think this needs to be address to see if that can cause regen problems.
I know some trucks require air pressure to aid with the regen.

If the air compressor is going bad...

Olymoly... that third tank come on. What is that tank. There is maybe a Mack that carries three tanks under the drivers door. But it's killing me here.

She actually does know a lot about trucks, it's just that she don't know enough about this truck and the regen system. She was getting harass everywhere she works at so she decided to open her own company and work for herself so she don't get harass no more.

But yes it's a learning experience for her.

Harrass? Are you able to elaborate? Ive already had a discussion with another about that early today in these forums. I wonder if it is common.

My position stems from being able to eyeball, trace the various system lines of air, electrical, abs, fuel etc that keeps a truck going to the various tanks and whatever is attached to them. The Turbo for example has a charge air cooler line clamp that needs checking carefully daily to be sure it's tight. You will know it's not if the clamp broke killing your poor engine.

Sitting here after googling Peterbuilts, I feel like im going crazy over this diagram, that diagram etc. When whatever the issue is ultimately resolved I would be more than glad to learn exactly what is what there under that pete.

Okay, I had an 09 387, and can offer something, I think. There ARE 3 tanks...sort of. Under the passenger seat was one tank, under driver's side there were 2, stacked one on top of the other. This double tank is the "wet" tank. If oil is coming out of it, that is compressor failure. As for the regen troubles, is it a Cummins, perchance? If so, there are multiple sensors that need regular changing, and, at that age, her catalyst might just be shot. There's lots of info about maintaining this system to be found online. Tell her to look up Dpf system maintenance videos on YouTube to see the sensors and how to deal with them.
