Hi All,
I have a bad injector that I want to replace. I am a bit confused on how to set the injector clearance after I put a new one there. Cummins talks about a dial indicator to measure the travel of the injector and also about turning the adjusting screw on the rocker arm for the injector.
1. Can someone help me understand what is the point of a dial indicator?
2. Any simple wording on how to adjust the injector?
3. Any idea of the hole diameter in the injector body where you put the Cummins tool to pull the injector up? I like to build a tool myself.
Thanks!

You may have better luck on rawze.com there are some real Cummins experts on there. A few here too.

Also, if I follow the adjustment instruction, meaning turn the screw down until in touches the plunger and back off 120 degree, why would I need the dial indicator?
Thanks. -
Yes,
All they mean is put the contact point of the dial indicator directly above the ball that contacts the injector on the injector rocker. It's just so you get an accurate measurment. The dial indicator method is a way of checking to see if they are in adjustment.
You can just use the adjustment procedure. The step about purging the fuel is critical to proper adjustment.spsauerland Thanks this. -
When you set a Celect injector, you are setting with plunger travel all the way down. If overhead hasn't been run in awhile, the carbon and gunk gets smashed in nozzle orfices and you have a misfire. That is why they have step of spraying carb cleaner and a way to check without just performing the adjustment. When I run an overhead on engine with Celect injector I don't set injector unless I can let carb cleaner soak awhile. Tighten adjuster til you just feel it bottom and back off 2 flats.

Injector link will travel down. You will "feel" the plungers bottom. Just want to bottom them, not smash them.

This is what I used when I torqued my injectors. https://www.amazon.com/ARES-4-inch-...899&sr=8-3&keywords=newton+beam+torque+wrench
You should do the entire overhead set, do not just do the one injector. -

Agree.
Had a guy doing a few injectors on this engine and didnt follow procedure. Pulled all the rockers, slapped em in and didint set the overhead. Valve bridge was off the stem and it knocked the keepers off and dropped a valve on the road test. Kablooie!!!!!!. Flip the rocker and adjust adjust the one or better yet adjust the whole thing as stated above. Your in there anyhow. Make sure it's all good.spsauerland, pushbroom and Justrucking2 Thank this.
