BTW, I get my oil samples done at blackstone. $28 bucks and they send you free bottles and mailers. Cheap insurance.

When mine went, my engine started to lobe and rock the truck like a cammed out dragster!

Little known fact, Cummins came out with a update for the camshafts on the dohc 871, they made the lobes wider and also updated the rockers to make the rollers wider to help with oil distribution and counteract the horrible wear problems.

Cummins recommends changing the rockers when you change the camshaft as the new camshaft will be the updated one and they are not compatible. They say you can just change the camshaft but you will get irregular wear.

As I said, little known fact. Ask 10 mechanics and 9 will say I'm lying till I show them the quickserve tsb. Of course it is up for debate of you actually need to change the rockers or not, alot of mechanics will say Cummins is full of it...... that may be true, I'm no mechanic so I don't know but I just went and bought a used cam from a Cummins shop that does remans and keeps alot of good parts around.

I was told the exact same thing. No waranty unless you replace cams and all 24 followers. That parts and labor was almost 1/2 the price of the reman engine. Hence the reason I just put a complete reman in from Cummins. Updated cams and followers in it and fresh throughout including engine wiring harness and all sensors.

You guys are right. We will not get by Cummins if all the parts were not changed out.

To the OP, you have plenty of time still. I've seen them go another 200k miles on good oil changes with more scoring than yours have. It's when they start to flatten out on you that you need to start paying attention for the outer protection of the metal is then compromised and they could come apart. Just start saving the money up.

Actually, the narrow rollers are comparable with the wide lobe cam. Also, the update is available for the 870, 871, 2250, and 2350.

got a new camshaft and 1 rocker replaced 5 months ago due to ticking noise, came back 3 months later for a clunking/ticking type noise, ended up being 2 bad rockers so replaced those. now engine started making same clunking/ticking noise again. im replacing new camshaft and 12 new rockers. what can keep[ causing this issue, and how can i prevent cam/rocker issues in the future? also do i need to inspect anything else bc of the metal debris, or just do oil change and clean metal from head as best as possible.

Inspect and replace oil bypass valve and make sure latest part number.

Always a good idea to replace all rockers with a new cam for longevity. Old rollers can transfer wear to the new cam and cause premature failure

Your right. This time I’m replacing 12 new rollers with new camshaft. And also doing another full PM service.
