Working for a small outfit and about to be transferred into my first truck with a cat. I'd appreciate some clear knowledgeable info about safe rpms for these engines. These guys think they know a lot but seem to contradict each other.

2006 kw t800 18speed with a c15 cat twin turbo installed. Have yet to see it first hand so not sure of the rating on the engine, one guy says 475 and another thinks higher. Was originally configured to haul super b but now hauls a single tanker.

I will aim to run it without going over 1500 rpm as much as possible but am getting conflicting info from these guys on what rpm ranges these are meant to operate in. This is being used for off road oilfield hauling so meeting some very steep hills with very heavy loads on icy roads.

What is the max rpm to use when pulling on a steep hill, and more importantly at what rpm does engine damage become possible when being pushed downhill by a heavy load?

I'd like to start knowing clearly what the engine can and cannot handle.

    TIA

Safe rpm is from 800 to rpm limiter.

So no general guidelines as to where damage is likely to start when being pushed downhill - where the limiter isn't an issue?

This topic came up during the discussion regarding a previous driver doing damage. Everyone's opinion of where this point is seems to be different so I thought on this site I might get a clear answer.

On C-15 single turbo you can not go past 2100 rpm when going downhill with a Jake ''ON" as it says in the operation manual. I am not sure about a twin turbo Cat..

The maximum torque and HP curves, cross at about 1500 RPM, and with an 18 speed you have a 300 RPM split, You should keep the RPMs between 1600 and 1200, and on the Jake's you can go higher, a "B" did OK at 3000 it is in the manual. 2500 is a safe speed

Safe RPM going down hill is in the RPM range of the programming. Anything above 2300 is considered abusive driver behavior. You have to remember the ECM will record the max RPM the engine has been taken too. If they clear the driver history when they give it to you, it may be considered as abuse by the company going over what the RPM limit is and they'll know it was you. Anything above 2500 will be logged by the ECM with a date and time stamp. It will be hard for you to say it wasn't you if this shows up as you driving that truck, with your past log books in the office to confirm it. Valve float won't occur until above 3000 RPM, but the rocker arms may break before than.

i keep mine under 1600, usually under 1500 unless im heavy where i need a bit more rpm.

i cruise 65 at 1350rpm and it does okay on fuel.
