So I have a 2001 freightliner classic. All of a sudden the speedometer and odometer stopped working. The rpm gauge works fine. Any clue on if it could be the meter or sensor? Help!!!!

    Thank you

Could be the speedo head, VSS sensor or a wiring issue. Do you have a 2 wire or a 4 wire VSS?

ya ill say same thing kinda. check the sensor that is located on transmission rite where yoke comes out there is ither most likely a problem with the wires or sensor itself if you do change out sensor!!!! rember that under that sensor is a tone ring witch is a ring that has high and low spots as it spins so put your finger in sensor hole and make sure that it is at a high spot and then screw sensor in until it hits then back it off about 3/4 of a turn then tighten jam nut

Same problem kinda. My speedo works and my odometer stopped counting. I checked with Freightliner and a new standard head cost $197. a chrome head cost $239. I changed the VSS first. For about a year prior to the odometer failing completely, The speedo would stop working and I would disconnect and reconnect wire connection at back of VSS and that would get the speedo to work.

The sensor is just a magnet. Not much to go wrong there. You're probably looking at a new speedo. I'd go with IssPro unit, one that goes to 120 mph:biggrin_2555:

Anybody know where the switches on the back of the speedo should be for 24.5 full size rubber should be. Also seems like my tach is 100 RPM's off. My apologies for hijacking the thread. And thanks to anyone who can help me!

Tire size isn't the only factor, rear gears are just as important. You need to know the actual pulses per mile. Tire revs per mile (published by the tire manufacturer), times axle ratio, times tone ring teeth in the trans (usually 16). One you know the pulses per mile, you look it up in the chart to set the switches.

Need a new speedo head unit. Mine did that. Shows speed accurately but the gears do not spin to count the distance. It is about 400 (cdn) for the part. You will be at 000000. You can probably do it yourself. There are about 8 pins in the back, match the new one to what the old one is set at. Each one is just up or down. It is for gear selection so it counts properly.
