Star with the basics chalk bulbs and fuses on the brake lights not working would guess bad brake light switch or turn signal switch can cause that as well and check the tail light wires I am sure a truck that age has been cut into a few times also check tri harness if wires loose in that brake lights can touch turn signal wires on trailer connections and cause problems

i have traced the problem to the signal that comes from the brake light switch. with a multi meter i get 12 volts, if i connect the stop and turn light to my output from brake light switch no lights, if i connect the tail light to the output from the brake light switch i get a very dim tail light. i've bin scratching my head for a few hours here and can't think to what would cause that to happen.

What is the voltage at the tail light its self sounds like a bad ground at tail lights and check voltage at bright light and marker light

forgot to mention i was checking the brake light pin in the connector for the signal light switch with a pigtail and light. if i put the pigtail and light to either pin for rear left or right turn signal i get correct signal light operation.
