Mine is shot, leaking 2 quarts per week. I bought it from a wreck about 7 yrs ago. Still have original, planned on using it as a core, buying a new box on my way home. Both are TRW, Trucks a 2000 Freightliner Classic. I’m wondering if I can rebuild it? I once changed a seal on a F250, only to have it blow a week later. Told the reason is the worm gear is shot. There’s a rebuild Shop near Sydney Ohio ( maybe) thats supposed to be good. I planned on buying one there. Anyone familiar with that place? I can’t find it. Otherwise, I’m in the Detroit area. Need a reman, or maybe a kit, at least a bearing and seal looks like. Any info appreciated. I’ve yet to call the Dealer. As I recall they were expensive. Shop in Ohio was $575. Probably $750 now. Any ideas?

Try Weller or Valley. They sell rebuilt ones, just a thought

Steering gear is one of those items I feel is left to be rebuild by someone that does it every day on a repeated basis, just for reliability reasons.

Plus, you’ll probably have issues sourcing internal parts and the cost will be out of this world for only one box.

    Get a Weller reman.

I was in this conundrum a few years ago when mine sprung a leak. Ultimately, I decided it was better to just have a shop install one of their rebuilt TRW units. I would expect the same quality from Weller. It wasn't expensive. It took them about an hour and I have peace of mind knowing it's a solid piece that won't kill anybody.

A few years ago I removed a TRW/Ross gearbox to have it rebuilt because it was leaking underneath.

It costs about $550 with a one year warranty, same as the dealership, without the price mark up.

If it's only leaking from the steering shaft seal, l take it to trade in after the 2ed seal l put in started leaking after about 3 years of use ?

I didn’t think the $100 junkyard box would last this long. Figured if it lasted a year, be worth having a core upfront. Just watched some videos. Seal replacement looks easy, My shafts got some play. Rebuild video looks too complicated for me.

I need to find the shop in Ohio. They’re reputable and close by. Avoid shipping costs. Cheap ones on line brand new for $500. I’m Leary. Only because it’s a steering box. TRW factory is near by. You’d think I could get one easily. Lol. Probably made in Mexico. Brand new original would be ideal.

I used the best rebuild shop in Atlanta before the shut down and 0 ring started spray hydraulic fluid and burned out the pump and new rebuild box I went back and had it in my trunk the guy came out to look at it and said he was going to lunch and if I could follow him to his house he would build it on his lunch hour, he pulled it apart and l had never seen so many steel balls rolling around in the tray he had around his work bench, l never could have put it back if he didn't have all the new parts in boxes! it worked for years with 1 finger steering?
