I just had a job offer from a company hauling steel from Houston to the New Orleans area and lumber back to Houston. He pays $200 dollars a day, period. Its 5 days a week so it would come out to $1000 dollars a week. After taxes I figure about $800 a week. The part I like is that I live halfway between Houston and New Orleans so that would put me home every night. Does this sound like a good deal or not?

It all depends on the job and what benefits come along with that pay. How much does medical and dental cost you? What type of retirement programs does the job have? If you put all those together then it might be a lousy job. But if some of those benefits are paid or are low cost then sure it sounds ok.

Well I'm not so worried as far as benefits go. My wife has great medical, vision, and dental coverage through her job so she covers our kids and myself. I have a savings with my credit union that I put so much a week into for retirement. I've just never had a job where I'm set at one salary. I'm used to dictating what I make a week by how hard I run.

Well let's start from home to Houston. 2 hrs driving to Houston then say 1 1/2 hrs to unload. Just to be safe I'll say 3 1/2 hrs reloading and 2 to 2 1/2 hrs back home. So 10 1/2 to 11 hrs total. I'd say 13 hrs to do a New Orleans turn around given the 18 mile bridge at 55 mph our and dealing with Baton Rouge.

Are you positive he will let you go home every night??? The loads might dictate you be in Houston first thing in the morning to unload and back to NO by the end of the day.... or vice versa.

Now if you can get up at say 5am, drive to Houston and unload, and then go to NO and unload, then reload and go back home then I'd say it isn't bad, but i doubt that is the way it's set up...

Also, what if you only run 4 days, and can you work weekends if you want to or if the need arises for some reason???????

Thats close to what I was figuring. I can go other places an make more money by running harder if I need to. Whats eating at me is the fact that Id clear roughly $800 a week and be home. I've been debating this in my head all day and it's givving me a headache. Lol. Thats why I posted the question here.
