I am 20 years old and I am preparing to get my class A CDL in Illinois. I have already finished reading the handbook and have studied airbrakes, combinations, and the tanks endorsements. I am ready to go and get my permit but the only problem I have is that my 21st birthday in coming up in 4 months and I am planning on attending a CDL school in order to get driving practice. The CDL school is a 5 week program and also has companies come in every week to recruit new drivers. My current plan is to get my permit now and then wait a month before my birthday and register for the CDL school so that by the time I finish the course, I will be 21 and won't have any restrictions on my license. Should I wait until my 21st birthday or just get my permit and license now? Also in the CDL handbook it states that in order to get your cdl permit in IL, your current license has to be valid for at least another 180 days, which is also how long the permit is valid for. If I wait until after my birthday, I will have to renew my regular license first before I could get my CDL permit. Any answers will help, thank you.

I’m kinda confused. Why put anything off if you really want your cdl. Get your class A. Do you think you have to retake something when you turn 21 or something? Go work in your state hauling for a local construction company. Then when you turn 21 go haul for a big company over state lines.
guribe Thanks this. -
Are you not allowed to renew your license 90 days prior to your birthday?
guribe Thanks this. -

There will not be any restriction on your cdl if you are not 21. You just can't haul interstate until then. Get it now and you will be good to go.

You won’t have to renew it buddy. Just go and get it. The interstate restriction just goes away when you turn 21

I don't know the law for Illinois but if the permit is only good for 180 days. I think would want till cdl school because you might need the for a couple weeks to drive on before going back to get the cdl. That how I had to do it but that was long time again. We got the cdl permit/ temp license and that would let us drive around on the road during the cdl school. Once that was done and we went back to upgrade to get regular CDL.
I failed the road test the first time. So I had to go back for another week of cdl school driving, meaning I needed the permit longer then other people to keep driving for training. -
Smart move on your part; get that cdl early and hit the road when you're 21 yrs. old.
Plenty of companies hire 21 yr. old drivers and we can give you a few to apply with.
You can start researching companies now if you want. The school will have a few they push, but there's plenty more the school probably won't even mention that are good.
Here's a few that hire 21 yr. old new cdl school graduates. If any website has "experience required", ignore that because it's not correct or up to date.

Jesus wept. You are an idiot if you want to become a truck driver before you've even tried to be a success at anything else. You haven't got any idea how long a downhill road you'll have ahead of you. ANYONE who encourages you is completely and utterly ignorant. At 20 you are the dawn of a spring day. I would give EVERYTHING I have to be 20 and STUPID again.
Drivingotr4life and guribe Thank this.
