    2-axle:
Im currently saving up to buy a truck but Im not sure what kind I should get. Right now I haul bulk cement locally as a company driver. The operation manager said that he's always hiring sub haulers but I'd have to get a 2-axle truck and add a blower(7k-20k) to it. A lot of the sub haulers I speak with say they average around 10K per month after expenses. This sounds extremely attractive because its decent money and i'd be home nightly with the possibility of weekends off.

    3-axle:
The reason why Im considering a 3-axle truck is because I can haul a lot of different trailers with it. The only problem is that I don't know that much about the business side of freight. I don't really want to go back to OTR but if thats what I have to do to make money then thats what I'll do. Im working on getting a TWIC so that I can haul containers from the ports as well. I see a lot of companies saying that there are owner ops averaging 150-350k per year. Not sure if thats true but I'd be willing to hire a driver to team with. I love the versatility of having a three axle but need to get some facts about these companies before I purchase.

    Box Truck:
I worked as a contractor for a major company delivering home furniture. I grossed over 2200 a week and I was home every night. It did require a lot of back breaking labor but at the end of the week it was worth it. Well, if you own the truck its worth it. After the lease, insurance, fuel, workers comp, taxes, and helper pay I only made enough to cover fuel for the following week. There is a large earning potential in this business but you have to have to own the truck and run it seven days a week. I was fortunate enough to make some connections with people in the mattress business as well so I could always do that. The main reason why I think about buying a box truck is because they run about 20-30k instead of 50-70k. Plus I'd be home every day.

    The question:
If you had the money, what truck would you buy and why?

    Thanks!

You said it yourself. You like the three axle because it is more versatile. Three axle. It is more versatile and better to sell. I can do the work of a two axle with it and the work of a three axle. Remember this, as an owner opp operator you don't know what's next. It is good to be prepared. That's why many have sleepers, sure I may not need it now because I am home every night, but I don't know what's next. Maybe tomorrow I will get a job opportunity that is better but requires a few nights weary away from home or the company I work for went under and I have no job. This is true especially in today's time. You don't know what's next and its good to be prepared. Versatility is also major now. I been local regional for a long time and always had a sleeper truck because you never know. It's the same with you. You can buy the 2 axle for this job but what if it falls through or you get a better one but that one needs a real truck with a sleeper being optional. Also where are you located.

Good point. I live in the San Francisco bay area. The economy is booming out here (because of the tech companies) and concrete buildings are extremely busy. My operation manager told me that I had to have a 2-axle truck in order to do the job. I'll keep an eye out for 3 axle trucks at the plants but I haven't seen one yet.

The bay area is a good place to be. If it's busy then that's good. Busy means work and money. You could ask the guys who drive those trucks if they would go for a three axle with a small sleeper or day cab. You could also ask the operations manager if a three axle would be too much. However, either way get a twic card.
