Hello drivers , my Detroit has blowby coming out the tube and the oil fill . More less looks like vapor with a smell . Engine was rebuilt 8 yrs ago not sure about mileage. But when I start the truck COLD OR HOT outside , I can just tap the start button and boom it fires right up . I mean just tap the button . This is a good thing right? Just want to learn . I know a 60 has blowby , but just curious. Thanks guys be safe .

Sounds good to me. That's a rare bird indeed if it's really a '99. I had a friend who had one in a classic Freightliner.

My 96 Series 60 12.7 appears to have enough blow by that would make an emissions motor owner stroke out. 640,000 miles on the latest rebuild and it’s strong as a new rope. Several years ago while loading/idling on a cool morning, I had a well intentioned fellow driver come over and tell me I needed a rebuild ASAP. He told me that I was in luck since he had a 2013 Paccar he could sell me out of a wrecked truck. I just laughed and said no thanks, you couldn’t give me that motor. Modern day Emissions motors definitely don’t breathe like mine, but I won’t be trading for one any time soon.

Blowby is a sign of worn piston rings. Maybe even broken rings.
If you start losing Oil pressure. It's way past time to rebuild. Blowby contaminates the oil to the point its no longer good oil.
If it's really bad. Cops will hassle you thinking your motor is on fire. Maybe even put you out of service.
I won't get in to that story.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Vapor out of the draft tube (which this is) may be a case of other problems, like a head gasket.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -

Didn’t know 14L was available before 2001. I’d run that vin through the Dealership. Sure it’s not a 12.7? My 99 12.7 in a 2001 Classic had massive blow by on a rebuild starting around 700k. Ran it 1.4 mil miles before dropping a liner and blowing head gasket. The cylinders were a bit glazed. Not terribly bad. The valve guides were completely shot though. One piston actually had a notch on it from a valve hitting it. Also had terribly rusted head bolts. I read somewhere it’s caused by a leaking head gasket.
