Sounds like someone put something in my driver's side stack. It's rattling something awful. Everything is tight.

I noticed at the shop the other day after having some motor work done, that one of the exhaust clamps on the exhaust manifold was worn out. I asked the mechanic about it (because I couldn't tighten it down), and he told me to leave it because once I break that seal I could have a problem.

Any ideas? It's about to drive me bananas!

    Thanks,
    Toby

Could be a baffle in the muffler rattling. Not sure what you mean on the clamp.
Is it on the slip joint?
    Any black soot?
If it's just rusty and crusty, and no black soot leave it alone.

Truck had a 3406e. On the exhaust manifold there are 2 joints. On these joints are 2 exhaust clamps....something similar to what is on your actual exhaust pipe.

    Thanks for your help.

Sounds like I need a new muffler on that side since it's just rattling on the driver's side.

Baffles inside the muffler, now would be a good time to replace both with some Donaldson m100463 high flows, you can pick them up for less than $100 each and they are the same size as the muffler on it.

There is a packing in there. There were a few different styles over the years. Personally, I'd change them out, if the clamp cannot be tightened down, it will eventually blow out. Cat sells them in a kit to do both joints. It comes with new clamps, packing and the 1/2 sleeves you need to do the whole job. If you run too long with it leaking, you chance eroding the manifold and it will never seal.

Is this a job that I can do myself? Just pull the old clamps off and put the new ones on and tighten them down, or do I need to pull the exhaust manifold?

    Thanks for your help grapeape

You won't need to pull the manifold, as the others have said, they come in two halves.

I guess what I have called the clamps is what I should refer to as the half sleeves?

If so, the sleeves that are on it are one piece, so I'll have to cut them up or bend them in half to get them off the exhaust manifold.

I'll be checking prices on the kit.

    Thanks for your help guys!

It currently has the Donaldsons on it. I'm just going to replace the one side that is bad for now. Running a little too light on funds. I'm having a clutch job done, a drive axle resealed, and the muffler replaced. Better save what I have left.
