Hey guys,
I have a friend with no CDL that bought a 1987 Mack twin stick roll-off dumpster truck and has asked that I do the driving for him. (50 mile round trip once a week) I'm am an industrial electrician turned teacher. I have my CDL and all of my experience is in an International 9 speed. I've seen several videos on you tube, but none actually explain what's happening as they go through the shift pattern. How many actual gears are there, are you splitting each as you go up, or do you go up so many and then split them? I know there's no substitution for time behind the wheel and that's coming up, but I also know I need to understand the process. Thanks in advance for your help.

The front stick is the main transmission, The rear is the brownie. Put the main box in first or second dpending on your load then put your brownie in whatever gear you need to get it moving...Then just shift the brownie as you would a reguler tranny bear in mind that many brownies have a reverse shift pattern so read your shift pattern card on the dash or wherever it is. When you get to the highest gear in the brownie shift the main box to the next gear and the brownie to either low or second depending on the box and repeat this process till you get to the highest gear. As for downshifting...Reverse the process.
rookietrucker Thanks this. -
And if someone tells you you have to put your left arm through the steering wheel spoke to steer and shift the big stick, while shifting the little stick with your right hand, tell 'em "Allow Me" said they're nutso! (4and4, 5and4,6and4, big box, little box, big stick, little stick and my favorite 'mixing sticks').

You don't have to...But I've done it in the past.
But if you don't shift'em square, You'll learn how to unstick them. -
I bet it is a 5 speed on the first stick and HI-LO-and REVERSE and the second stick.

we have a twin stick Mack at the city I work for and the main stick is for the gears and the smaller is for reverse and forward.
-
I checked and there are 5 positions on the stick closest to the seat, and three positions (HI-LO-and REVERSE) on the second stick. It should be ready to fire up and put on the road next week sometime, then I'll see what it's all about. Thanks for the replies.

That is what I thought. Good-luck. I bet you catch on to the transmission fairly quick.

I would guess its a 10 speed. Would you shift 1-2-3-4-5 then grab the other stick and put it in high then repeat the patern on the main stick Like you do with the range lever in a straight 10, or would you use the second stick to "split" every gear like you do in a super 10?

I am thinking that it is waht they rever to as a 6 spd but look at it this way you have 6 reveses the rev in 1st gear you can walk faster than the truck will roll if you get in it and try to shift like a reg cummins engine the rpms have to drop way down in order to shift Good luck and happy trucking ,you will be just fine after 1 day you will be able to shift blind folded .
