Small time farmer here that picked up an old CO 4070 cheap at an auction. Truck runs good and has a 290 HP cummins in it. I have questions about the transmission. It has a Spicer SST-6 split torque transmission. I've never seen a truck this size with only six gears and wonder if i'm missing something to get more out of the transmission.
Thanks for any help and comments welcome.

You have to wind it out before you shift........
No progressive shifting with a 290..... -
Change the transmission.
Mack had plenty 6sp boxes in the 70's.
You rev it in to the red then the engine wants to die on an incline.
Just by changing to a 9 , 10 or 13 speed would make a huge difference. -
Yeah I would prefer to change the transmission, but i'm a 21 year old extremely green amateur, I've only ever drove a little during crop harvests and don't have much of a mechanical setup with my dad. He picked up this truck at auction for 2500, because it ran. I'd like to get a couple years of harvest out of it and then upgrade significantly. Thanks for the input.

Also, to add another question. The previous owner had a posted GVW of 60,000 on the side, and I can't seem to read the factory plate to decipher the manufacturer rating. Would you think this number correct or higher/lower than the actual? And if so what would the original probably be?

They did and can work.
You just wont believe the difference a few extra cogs will have. -
48 to 52,000......
Unless it's got a heavier front axle or a lift axle.... -
Thanks for helpin a newbie out guys. Appreciate it alot. -
A truck that old with twin-screw rears and Reyco 4-leaf suspension, 10.00-20 tires, that will be 50,000# tractor weight rating. Yes, those transmissions were common in those days as my Cummins 290 was backed with a Spicer 955TO-6sp with deep reduction activated by air switch transmission where you had to go down through the first gear through a false neutral then up to reach low gear. Shifting that baby was slow and time consuming but it got the job done. In deep reduction gear, top speed was maybe 1-MPH. I used to get the truck moving and get out and walk along side the truck. Those were the days. I love my old Cummins 290 with big PT fuel pump. That thing would lay down a solid black smoke cloud that would make midnight out of day light. Can't do that anymore but that was a pulling little engine.

at that time a lot of the big outfits like roadway yellow CF and so on ran spicer transmissions I am gussing they were simple and bullet proof. As for the 290 I don't believe they came out until 1973 if it was in an International from the factory it was probally painted red. 1972 should have been a 250 or 335 from the factory. I had a 1972 COF4070A with a 318 detroit 13 speer roadranger 444 SQHD rears and 10.00X22 tube type tires on dayton wheels. It also had a kysor airconditioner thru the roof heated mirrors and power steering that was a BIG RIGGER in 1972. I would run that thing as hard as it would go and if I was luckey I could average 45 miles an hour with it
