Hey what's up guys looking for some advice about how to best enter the dump trucking and equipment hauling market in North Texas. I'm a new Company Owner and MBA graduate looking to start my own outfit in the Construction Industry. I have experience working with dump trucks when I was younger and in my college days, but I've always had a interest in heavy equipment since a kid. Professionally I've been working for the last couple of years at a Corporate level for one of the largest Concrete Pipe and Building Products manufacturers in North America. So being on the job-site doesn't bother me.
What I'm looking to do/Investment Opportunity: 1. Buy a dump truck - 12-14 Yard Dump Truck or Day Cab w/ 20 Yard End Dump.
    2. Hire Dedicated Driver Pay % Per Load 3. Sub - Contract work w/ existing Dump Trucking Companies.
    4. Buy 2nd Truck at End of Year 1

While all of these activities are going on my main task as a owner will be to ensure that the truck has work at all time and to dispatch. I plan to utilize a bountiful alumni network, In house Government Contracting Specialist, Marketing to Contractors etc to get work. The goal is to eventually get away from sub-contracting and to be in 1st position.

My questions is do you guys think this is feasible as Ideally I would like to keep my 9-5?
If so,is it better to start with the small dump truck or the larger end dump?
What is a fair % for End Dump Drivers in Texas considering we are a startup, but with lots of potential growth.

    Thanks !

End dumps tend to serve places that are fixed like Read Mix Concrete plants. It's not difficult to sweep up after them.

Dump trucks go sometimes where end dumps would get stuck on terrain and you can pretty much put every rock big or small where it needs to go without hardly any cleanup. Two dump Trucks can beat a single end dump on a big enough job the end dump rules.

I think most of your question would be better suited to the Owner Operators Sub Forum as they run their own trucks already. That is the closest thing you are going to find to the 'business' side of trucking.
