So im not a trucker but am facinated with trucking. I heard newer trucks have a feature that shuts the truck down after you hit 11 hours. Is this true? What happens if you dont make it to destination or rest stop before you hit 11 hours? Is the truck stuck where it shuts down until after 8 hours? What would a driver do when this happens?

Most trucks have electronic log books that automatically log drive time if the truck is moving and will automatically show an hour's of service violation for exceeding11 hrs drive time. They do not shut the truck down or prevent it from moving.

They just shut down once it hits 11 hours. Just make sure you aren't crossing train tracks at the 11th hour o_O

But in all seriousness that's false. I've never heard of or seen any truck that does that.

Imagine the lawsuits when, not if, people started getting killed when trucks started shutting off in the middle of the interstate. No company in their right mind would make a truck with that feature.

I think it's the most brilliant idea ever. I'm going to start buying wreckers tonight.

If the truck is wired for it I know peoplenet has a remote shutdown feature that dispatch can use. But shutting down a truck @ 11hrs would be insane-I can imagine just starting down a mountain when the engine shuts down, no jakes, no power steering, and running out of air pressure... If I survived, I would personally hunt down the safety manager with my Lapua

Ok, thanks for replies. My co-worker has a friend who is a trucker and claimed his company trucks will shut down, however as you fellows replied, thats not a safe deal with truck just shutting down while driving on interstate

About as safe as trucks that automatically slow down and/or apply the brakes.
