I just recently started driving a dump truck. The owner does not have a CDL, nor has he ever driven a dump truck other than on his own property. He is paying me by the hour and he seems to feel it is taking too long to get to jobs/dump sites. I told him that it is normal. He sometimes accepts jobs where the travel time is 15 miles, up to 40 miles away. Sometimes even down bad dirt roads, winding turning dirt roads, steep hills. cattle guards etc. Normally haul at least 14 tons, sometimes 15. He prefers 15 tons because that's supposedly what the truck is rated for. He said it should only take maybe 5, 10 minutes longer than by car!!! But as a driver I feel like its closer to double the time it takes a passenger car. Maybe not double the time of a car...but close to that. This is rural farm country and most of even the paved roads have no shoulder.

Yessir, I hope he does come around and understand that I am running as fast as I safely can. But if not I can always move on. I have told him twice now how much time is needed and he shakes his head in disagreement. But he hasn't ever been in the hotseat so he is speaking out of turn. These little narrow gravel roads with loose gravel and chugholes, rub-board bumps slow everything down. Then the farm to market roads are paved but narrow and with no shoulder, sometimes steep embankments on both sides and water. Combine all that with a older truck with slack in the wheel and that means slow down to a speed that you are in control of the truck and situation.

I'm usually cool as a cucumber but this just irritated me. Tell him take a ride or shut up stupid.

I just picture him talking in that north jersey/NYC accent lol

All you gotta do is say sure boss I can go faster but it might end up totaled and I hope you got good insurance. That should settle him and if not time to start looking elsewhere. Don't risk your career for bozo

Safety is number 1. I worked for an outfit that tried to run me that. He wanted me to take risks, speed, ect ect. No sir, safety is number 1. Im keeping a clean CDL and not killing anyone. The company I formerly worked for has 4-5 trucks sitting. The cat is out of the bag. No one wants to work there anymore.

The owner actually had the balls to call me a dumb motherf'r. Look who the dumb motherf'r is now, 4-5 trucks sitting, he lost one of his regulars recently. How much money Is he loosing, no one wants to work there anymore.

Bad roads, 10mph. 10mph takes an hour to go 10 miles. I don't know why some bosses/dispatchers have such a hard time understanding that, but it is a common problem in the oilfield. They don't want you driving fast, but expect you to get to locations that are 10 miles of lease road in 20 minutes.
