This is about the time it needs turbo de-coking, EGR cooler, DPF and DOC. Check the exhaust manifold for any sooting because they are prone to cracking too.

    MattyNJ1 Thanks this.

Yikes.........what is the life span of the motor....generally? Is 200k miles something to walk away from?

The core motor isn't bad. It's all the emissions stuff bolted around it that doesn't last. Google search for Maxxforce, all your questions will be answered.

Another problem with that engine is they turn lifters and eat the camshaft up. Navistar used a flimsy piece of sheet metal, well little thicker than that but not much to hold the lifters and it breaks thus turning lifters sideways. Don't know how common it is but I have 3 sitting at shop we use for cores all with bad cam and lifters. Mileage on them vary from 100,000 to 300,000.

The cam follower retainers are certainly an issue that are most predominant with 07 Maxxforce emission models. Those have a bit heavier valve spring with only a single cam follower retainer compared to the previous EGR only 2004 emissions model. 2010 Maxxforce emission model engines were built with doubled retainers to eliminate the issue.

Thanks I didn't know they updated the later models. I had heard it was an upgrade to double up the retainers when replacing cam and lifters.

Yes, two will fit no problems on older ones.
