How common is this for a company that leases(not lease purchase) owner operator to have 1 million general liability coverage?

$1,000,000 General liability? Very common -- I have it and I'm just 1 truck...

$1,000,000 cargo? Not common for small carriers

Generally Great West writes mine for each customer individually. It is not cost effective for me to carry that much for all of my customers. I just do it by each customer and add the additional cost into their rates. Hope that helps.

Great west wouldn't cover me last I spoke with them: won't write policies for carriers based in CT. Which is unfortunate, as I always hear prices thru them are nice and affordable.

Sorry about that, must be something in your state that exposes them considerably. They lowered our rates when we quit running NY and above, and California. They told me if we stayed out of Florida that they would lower them some more, but I have a customer that needs us to go there once a year and they pay $6.00 per mile for that load. That one load makes up the difference for the slight increase. Good luck on your search.

I have GW for everything. Cargo is at 250. I have an additional through Lloyds of London for another 750k that kicks in after first 250 is used up. Lord, I hope I never need it....

I have a tractor only and wanting to lease on. I spoke with local companies here in NJ and they told something outrageous($34k-$55k) reason was I have less than 3yeats experience and a accident.

Also, they told me that I have to have my own authority in order for me to have 1 million general liability coverage!
    Is this true?

Russ, you carry that all year long? How much extra does that cost? I just add it to individual customers as needed, seemed more cost effective that way. Your way of doing it may actually be better.

Not sure, but more than likely. Call any truck insurance company in the morning and get the real answers. When you lease on the company carries all insurance and you run under theirs.
