Looking for a little help before I call road brake down. I went to slide tandems today and my fifth wheel slid instead. I checked things out and noticed the pins were not pushed out to lock the fifth wheel. Which is odd because I haven't ever slid the fifth wheel on this tractor and haven't had this problem before. The pins have always been in the locked position until today. I can not get the pins to push out no matter what I do. Anybody have any suggestions before I call road brake down? I just don't want to miss something obvious and look like an idiot when someone shows up.

Check to make sure the switch to release the fifth wheel is in the lock postion.
Maybe accidentaly you could have flipped it. -
Maybe check to see if all airlines to the 5th wheel are not kinked or pinched, leaking etc.?

This is really odd. Thanks for the suggestions guys... -
Lower the landing gear on the trailer, (taking the weight off the 5th wheel), flip the switch to the release position, adjust back to where you want it, now flip the switch back, wait a few seconds, and see which way to move to center the pins into the 5th wheel slots. slowly move into position, should reset the 5th wheel slide pins.
Good luck! -
The fifth wheel locks are pulled in by air pressure in the release cylinder and only go back out to the locked position by spring force. If you have never used this, then chances are the linkage is all seized up and too stuck and so the spring doesn't have enough force to push them out to lock. You might have to spray some WD-40 on the pivots and give the mechanism a few raps with a hammer to free it up. Plus there is probably lots of dirt and old grease built up around the slots causing more interference as well.
hunts2much Thanks this. -
Still don't have the foggiest idea how the pins got pulled in though.

I know most trucks will have the suspension dump switch or lever right next to the fifth wheel slide lever, usually both are air operated with same style of switch or lever and so is easy to accidentally flick the wrong one when coupling up to a trailer. It happens. Glad to hear you got it though!

I have the same switch on the dash of my new 2010 386 Pete that I use to haul a bulk liquid tanker w/o baffles. It would be great to be able to pull fifth wheel all the way forward at some shippers and recievers and then all the way back immediately when done loading or unloading. I tried to move my fifth wheel yesterday and it would not budge. A fellow employee said it probably needed to be greased and suggested I dolly down and then drop truck air bags to take weight off. But is there a way to make fifth wheel slide easier like maybe teflon plates or something similar? Maybe even use a hydraulic cylinder. This would also make scaling easier sometimes because I could move weight if coming up to a scale.
Also, it would be great to have an auto leveling fifth wheel since some of our trailers put too much weight forward and some put too much weight rearward. I think I want too much huh?

Just using it more frequently will help. !!
