Hi, i am looking for an advise on importing a used semi tractor from canada. I am buying it from my close friend. So it won't be through dealer. I wonder if i have to pay excise duty on the border, if yes then how much it would be for a commercial tractor?
Also FET (federal excise tax). Will i have to pay F.E.T on current price i will buy it for or the original price of truck ? Thanks

It says there is duty on foreign made vehicles. Duty rates are based on price paid or payable. Most Canadian-made vehicles are duty-free. Thanks for the information

I got a lot of information when I did it, and most of it was wrong! OOIDA sent me a list of importers so i called the nearest one. They told me it would cost me $2,000 plus the cost of changing the speedometer. I asked why did the speedo have to be changed. The answered "um, because x, no, because y, no, it just has to be changed!" I asked if they were transporting for that price. A laugh was the answer I got.

I flew up to Edmonton to pick it up, and the exporter that worked with the seller told me that they were putting vehicles in 30 day limbo at border crossings, but I might have the best chance crossing at Saskatchewan, but I couldn't because I didn't have enough fuel, so I crossed into Montana.
I paid $8.50 import fee and they stamped the EPA form and the DOT form.

You should have to pay FET, but that can be paid later, even on your income tax form. The amount is based on how much you paid, not the original price.

Which begs the question......If a vehicle is manufactured in the U.S. and then transported to Canada to be sold at a Canadian dealer and then is sold to a customer and said customer sells it 3 yrs later to a U.S. resident who then drives it back to the U.S. (where it was originally manufactured), should there be an import fee ?

Yes it was manufactured in US and then exported to canada. My friend bought it brand new from dealer in Abbotsford BC.

Then you don't need the EPA and DOT form. All those do is state that it is a foreign manufactured vehicle that complies with US standards. In your case it is an american manufactured vehicle. Your only issue is the FET, which is only collected from the first retail sale, or from the importer who is the end user. This is not collected at customs.
