I have been thinking for the past month about a change of career and I have decided that trucking is the way to go. I have a TDI school near me in NW Florida and I am trying to determine the best way to transition into trucking. I'm 43 no health issues, no dl issues, no criminal history, and good credit. I am unsure where to start and I feel going through the TDI makes the best sense for my CDL. However, I am unsure what companies I should look at. I currently live at 45 mins from Mobile, AL. Any advice?

Decent money in tankers; $60K + for a new cdl graduate.
Trimac Transportation has a terminal in Pensacola. Maybe no local positions available, and if not ask about long haul. That company would be my #1 choice where you are.
SVTN has a terminal in Saraland and hires new cdl grads.
McKenzie Tank Lines in Mobile. One of their trainers lives in Mobile and trains new cdl grads.
For these tank jobs, you will need to get the tanker/hazmat endorsements on your cdl and get a TWIC ID Card. Google for nearest TWIC office which is probably in Mobile. TWIC is an ID used for entry to sea ports, chemical plants, military bases, rail yards.
Now, scroll to the top of this page and click on "CDL Practice Tests" and memorize as much as you can. This will give you a head start before entering school.
Also Google "Free CDL Practice Tests Florida" and memorize.
There's several more tanker companies to choose from; let us know if your interested. -
Double post......Brexit.

CTL Transportation hires from that school you're thinking of attending.
Many tanker companies will reimburse you the tuition.
There's also:
Tidewater Transit
Schneider Bulk
Superior-Carriers -
I'm pretty wide open on the load types. I have been working in another field for the past 13 years. The children are grown up and I am hoping to begin making more than the 35k I have been stuck making in my current field as a paralegal. OTR is no problem here.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Those tanker companies will pay the best.
There's other types of freight to look at if tankers isn't what you want:
Abilene Motor Express - dry van & rerfigerated
Freymiller - refrigerated
Danny Herman Trucking - dry van
FFE (Frozen Food Express) - refrigerated
Schuster - nations largest ice cream hauler
Britton Transport - flatbed division
Magnum Ltd. - refrigerated
Navajo Express - refrigerated
MCT Transportation - refrigerated
Plenty to choose from and you probably won't hear about any of these companies in CDL school. They all hire new cdl grads. If the websites have "experience required", then the website hasn't been updated.
Submit online applications during the first week of CDL school. The more applications the better. This will give you plenty of time to look over the job offers and choose the one you like best.swaggerjacker and Lifechange05 Thank this. -
Screw that submit applications now.
Get the prehires before you go into school.
What I did.
Walked in already had half a dozen ppl wanting to hire me.
Setup the orientation during school.
Its quite funny watching all the companies begging you to come work for them. Trucking sure is different.
TDI will teach you what you need to know to pass the test but nothing more.
Lol if you wanna send me a PayPal address I can send you a $100 coupon for your $50lol
....see that.... That's called a referral bonus.Lifechange05 Thanks this. -
So it's fairly standard to go the route I'm going with this through a school like TDI. I realize some companoes have their own schools, but as I understand it the course will give me the necessary initial training to get my foot in the door. Just making sure I'm not doing an unnecessary step here.

Call some companies you like and ask if they hire from that school; about 99% will say yes.
Couple of guys posted several months ago they went to that school, I think in Milton, and were hired by CTL Transportation. -
Yeahpretty much so u are insurable.
Its a big scam modern education.
Anyway yeah that school counts as one yrs experience in recruiters eyes.
You should check into your local work/learning center. You might have grant money left from the Obama stimulus for your taking. Free money you won't have to pay back. Its only for "in demand" jobs in your state. In return you promise to live there for two years.
Certain cities like Laredo have their own programs like that for locals.
