We know what the regulations are.
How would you write the regulations if you had Carte Blanche?
For me, this would be it:
I would keep everything the same 11 hours driving, 14 hours total on duty, and ten hours sleeper, and 30 min break; however I'd add an additional tool to te split sleeper provision with what I would call the "Fatigued Driver Sleeper Exception"
"A driver, after driving five or more consecutive hours may take a rest period of no less than 3 hours in the sleeper berth but not greater than 5 hours. This period shall be logged as sleeper berth, and shall include the notation on the log book as "fatigued".
Utilization of the fatigued driver sleep time shall stop
the 14 hour clock, however no hours of the time used under the fatigued driver rule shall apply to the 10 hour consecutive off duty or sleeper berth provision."
I believe if you're that tired after 5 hours and you need a nap, you're in sleep debt, an you will need the extra sleep anyhow.
I don't know how many times I could have used a few hours sleep but lost legal driving time because my 14 hours would be up even though I had available drive time left
HOS Fantasy- If you could write the regulation...

able to pass the 11 AND/OR 14 hour rule if you are heading to a safe haven or heading back to your terminal. only 2 extra hours, once a wek
davenjeip Thanks this. -
I don't think they're all that bad now.
So maybe make it a '16' hour shift instead of 14.
Dropping the 30 min break.
And getting rid of the 70 hour rule all together.
So you could then drive 11 hours a day everyday forever.nightgunner, mickimause and dog-c Thank this. -
Everything's fine ,
except just drop the 34 deal .
It's costing me some productivity -
drop all of it!
if your tired pull over and sleep, if your not you can keep drivingdog-c, Tam_Tam, double yellow and 2 others Thank this. -
revert the rules back to where they were for 63 years, before they changed to the crap we have now back in 2004.
10 hour days is long enough. anyone that likes driving 11 hours is insane.
split your time. back then you could split the 10 hours, and your could split your 8 hours sleeper/off duty.
80 hours. as 70 just isn't enough for the majority of operations.
revert the 34 to the old rule. there's absolutely no reason we need the rule we have now.
eliminate the 30. just a waste of ink. split your 10/8 you don't need the 30.
mandatory personal conveyance. a driver shouldn't be punished becuase of how the day goes. and needs a place to park.
eliminate printouts. dot should be able to read our logs on whatever screen we use. let us print at our own convenience. for office keeping. eobr's don't need printers. why should laptops and tablets be any different. HOWEVER, screen should be 7 inches or bigger. who wants to look at logs on a cell phone. specialy you iphone lovers with your 3 inch screens.
related activities that dot wants us to use as on duty. shouldn't really matter and would qualify for off duty.
ALLOW THE TRUCK DRIVERS TO ACTUALLY DRIVE. SO THAT THEY CAN ACTUALLY MAKE A PAYCHECK. instead of thinking they are safer by making them park more then they work.Menehune, mickimause, dog-c and 4 others Thank this. -

We should be able to drive 12 hours a day and that should be for everyday of the week. Shippers and receivers pay a mandatory detention pay for over 2 hours and then we would see how many miles we would make. A minimum of 10 hours off a day. If you don't want to drive 12 hours then don't. I would love to be able to drive more. Should extend safe haven for when you get to trucks stops that are full or shippers and receivers take too long. This business used to be great but now a bunch of sissies tell us what to do
